What to look for in a highchair?

What to look for in a highchair?

I never really thought much of what to look for in highchairs, but my friend recently was talking about her highchair, and how great it is that it reclines....I was planning on registering for the Peg Perego one and I don't think it reclines.

What really should we be looking for? Obviously one that's sturdy and safe, with adjustable height positions, easily removable 'table' so that you can clean it easy?

Anything else? Is the Peg a waste of money? I think the one I want is $200.

I have the Chicco Mamma high chair, it's like the Prima Pappa from Peg Perego but got much better reviews, at least it did when I was registering. Plus my brother & SIL had it and loved it. It reclines, its easy to clean, its plush, it doesnt have to be put together, it has a 5 point harness, theres a safety lock on the tray table so the baby cant open it, which sometimes they can do with their foot if it's just a matter of pressing and pushing it. (Sounds weird but they can do it) I've turned a few people onto this highchair and everyone is very happy with it. And it think it's about $30 or $40 less than the prima pappa.

ETA: I thought the peg Perego one was about $170, the Chicco is about $129 or 139, I forget.

hmmm - yours sounds pretty good!! I'll have to go check it out, thanks!

Does it have adjustable height as well? (I guess they all do, right?)

I got the Fisher Price Healthy Care ($80) high chair. I wanted one with a removable inner tray. At the time it was the only one that had it besides the Prima Pappa($160). The only difference was the Prima Pappa had wheels. Since I did not need them I went for the one that was half the price. It has all the other features you mentioned. She fell asleep in it a few times and I was able to recline it for her to sleep.

Fisher Price Healthy Care got a great review in the Baby Bargains book. The new deluxe model (only found it at BBB though) comes with wheels, reclines, and has 3 inner tray liners.

But it got its highest marks with its spacing of the seat and tray, something I would have never given a second thought about. They have the smallest gap between the back of seat/baby and tray and shortest distance between bottom of seat and bottom of the tray. Basically no big gaps for food to fall through since baby can get close enough to tray. A complaint I've heard about other chairs.

My high chair converts into an activity table/chair.
My sis had it, I thought it was adorable, and I got it too..

Here are a few links to it.

I bought it at Sears.

great info, ladies, thanks!

I too would have never thought about a gap by the tray....

I wonder though - are having wheels preferred on highchairs? Do many people really move it around in the kitchen often?

I didn't get my highchair yet, but I think I was looking at the chicco mama at the time of registering. I just figure I didn't need it for a while so why spend the money. I guess I'll need it pretty soon though!

Teri, I am starting to look at what to register also. I find at this point that I am a bit overwhelmed by all the options. I really don't know what options I need and which I don't. I think I may go to BBB and start playing with the merchandise!

I guess some people don't, they just have one place they will always feed the baby. But we hardly ever eat in the kitchen (don't ask even tho' there are two tables and a counter in there!) and I want to be able to roll it onto the porch during nice weather we are often outside. Or into the dining room if we are in there. So I like that I won;t have to pick it up or drag it everywhere.

Re: What to look for in a highchair?

I agree that the spacing on the FP Healthy Care is great. I did not realize that others were so spacious until I saw friends kids in their high chairs. Just last week John Anthony was climbing out of his. Anna said he does it all the time. I like that I do not have to buckle Annalise into hers. If she is choking I can whip the tray off and get to her easily, but she cannot get out alone. Believe me when I say she is tiny and a climber. If my Houdini cannot get out then others will not either.

oh overwhelmed is not the word! I know very little about all of this stuff!

I'm trying to educate myself on what to look for in each item....meanwhile, I can't even decide WHERE to register! First I thought of BBB because I enjoy shopping there more, but BRU is more competitively priced and their website is much better overall!

As for the highchair - this FP one sounds good. I'd hate to have to worry about a baby climbing out of one the minute I turn around.

And if it has all the other features, then all the better

Thanks again ladies!
