BIL got married in hawaii last month and they are throwing a backyard party with all soughts of catered food, etc... do i where pants or since its summer, do i where nice kakhi shorts ?? i dont know. i want to be formal for the event but not sure what formal consist of.

I'd suggest nice khaki pants or linen pants or some sort of not too dressy but not too casual pant. Shorts might be OK depending on the crowd and time of day, but you'd be safer in lightweight pants, I think.

I think you should wear lightweight pants, collared shirt. Bring shorts to change into in case its hot.

I agree with the sun dress, but if you don't feel comfortable I would go for nice linen pants...but definitely not shorts for a wedding!

Tom is an attractive guy, but I'm not sure how he'd look in a sundress
If I were going to something like that, I would advise DH to wear pants, and a short sleeve button down shirt or maybe a golf shirt.

you can't go wrong with kakhi (sp?) pants and a short-sleeved button down shirt. I don't think shorts would be appropriate.
