Not quite there yet but I'll probably:

#1 - do a happy dance that we finally have a place
#2 - unpack
#3 - set up the nursery before baby arrives!

1. The day we closed we sat in our house in amazement. We went thru the range of emotions from happiness to oh my god what did we just do.

2-Before we really moved in - we cleaned the entire house top to bottom, got rid of some junk that was left behind, and painted a couple rooms (the ones we knew we had big furniture for).

3. Moving day - unpacked and started settling in and learned more about our house.

Did you mean this kind of stuff or major projects we undertook?

First we celebrated being new homeowners.

But in terms of redecorating:

1 - Had a cleaning company come in and scrub everything down

2 - We had new carpet laid while the rooms were pretty much empty

3 - Had furniture delivered

4 - Unpacked

I would have liked to have had everything painted first (we're getting that done now) but my painter wasn't available until recently.

We're also talking to landscapers about installing sprinklers and getting the yard under control.

1. Sanitzied and Cleaned everything from top to bottom

2. Threw away A LOT of junk the previous owners left behind.

3. Began making LONG LIST home improvements that were needed!

WOW these are great starting points to consider... How much does a cleaning crew/person run to scrub all from top to bottom, or would it be to presumuous to have a cleaning party with friends and food??

If you have the time, just get family/friends to help! Most people I know did this when they bought a home!
We are not moving in for a month most likely after we close so we will have plenty of time to clean at least (in between last minute wedding stuff)
After the closing, and the wedding still on the horizon I am not sure we will be able to afford the cleaning crew!!

We closed on a Friday and we arranged for a locksmith to come and change the locks, then we headed back to Boston to finish packing and meet the movers.

Our movers picked up our things in Boston on Monday and we drove down right after they left. We had some basic cleaning things in the car, and blankets and pillows to make a bed on the floor until the furniture arrived.

We got here late in the evening, vacuumed the floor and 'made the bed', cleaned the bathroom and tub, then crashed in exhaustion until the movers arrived bright and early Tuesday morning.

I had to stop by my office later on Tuesday, and it seems like we spent the next year unpacking. We're still working on fixing up and painting because we're doing it all ourselves, and DH is not too handy and hates doing this type of work, so it's hard to keep him motivated. He also works from a home office and so he likes to get away from the house on weekends.

His office is the first room we fixed up - within a few weeks, so he could set up his office and get back to work.

The first things we did were:

1. Removed three layers of really old, heavy wallpaper in the living room, hallway, and stairwell and primed and painted those walls.

2. Removed the nasty shag rug that the previous owners left and had the floors refinished.

3. Cleaned and sanitized the house.

This all happened before we moved in. There are so many more projects that we need to do though. I feel like the list never ends.

I remember someone telling me once that the first thing they did when they moved in was bought new toilet seats.

I kinda wish we did that!
