For those of you who moved from an apt in the 'city' into a house in the suburbs, what was the hardest thing to get used to??...(I'm from Bklyn, and compared to the 'burbs, this IS the city)
I mean, what was the biggest adjustment (other than a mortgage) that you had to make? Was it TOO quiet at first? Was it a 'weird' feeling being in a house vs. apt???
I was thinking about this last night and I KNOW I'll miss the view from my apt (i'm on the 20th floor!!!)...but I can honestly say I don't think I'll miss anything else about the place!!

The lack of noise!!!!! Living in the city you get use to hearing a lot of noise.

I am wondering too- I live in a quiet part of Queens but we are on the main road and across the street from a bar and next door to a catering hall. We also have tons of stores and restaurants etc. within a ten minute walk! We are moving to Putnam cty. and it's SO quiet. I know I will miss being able to walk to so many places.

#1 for me - commuting on a schedule. I didn't mind LIRR but I hate being on the schedule. Even though my commute is a little over an hour or so - it is always longer because you can't go catch a train or cab whenever you want to get home.
#2 - food - I love going out to eat and the lack of variety in LI at your fingertips stinks. Way too much Italian and not always very good Italian. Also, not as much delivers - you get the pizza place and chinese basically.
#3 - not being able to walk to anything. I miss the supermarket, dry cleaner, drug store, vegetable market, the gap, etc. all being in walking distance. What makes it worse for me is I do not drive.

hmmm...i was thinking this too!! my mom came over yesterday and was astonished to hear sirens..she was even looking out the window to try and see what was going on!! I'm so used to it I hadn't even noticed..I think you become sort of immune to the noise after a while.

Doing yardwork???
Tim still laughs at how amazed I am at birds, he says' Aw, city girl staring into the trees'. Never mind how much fun he made when i bought a small pair of binoculars to watch them!!
Oh, I got one ... WATER PRESSURE!!!!! My showers were AMAZING when I was in an apartment, now, not so much!! Plus I always had lots of hot water (unless there was a problem) ... when I moved in here, I made DH get a new, big hot water heater!!
Having to drive every where ...
When I first moved in, I was still working in NYC so having to live by the schedule of the LIRR was probably the hardest thing ... I went from living five blocks away from a subway which came every two minutes to having to drive (although very short distance) to the train that if I missed by a minute or couldn't find parking in the lot, was screwed for a half hour or so ...

having actual closet / storage space.
not having to worry about making too much noise walking around the house, playing the stereo or surround sounds - I was always used to having upstairs / downstairs /attached next door neighbors!

Re: What was the hardest thing to get used to???
We moved from Brooklyn to Orange County so I feel like I'm in a different country. I have wildlife visiting instead of friends & family. Bugs and birds sing their 'songs' instead of cars and people noise. I also don't drive and walking on my main road 5 miles to town is not really too smart. Its also strange to me that because everyone has at least their own acre, you don't see people that much so there's no one to really meet. But I do love it up here, the air smells CLEAN, no one is looking in my windows, and the freedom to do what you want with your own home is great!!

Re: What was the hardest thing to get used to???
I lived in Bklyn for the first 25 years of my life and then I moved out to Riverhead with my parents. Talk about culture shock! The two biggies for me were the lack of noise and not being able to walk to stores. I actually could not sleewhen we first moved because it was way too quiet out here. My LI coworkers thought I was crazy!
ETA: Oh, and for some reason, the pizza out here just doesn't taste the same.

I can relate. I used to live in Brooklyn and turned a deaf ear to sirens, airplanes, cars screaching etc.. when I moved to Nassau county the chirping of the birds early in the morning drove me nuts!

The COMMUTE. I find it to be hell. I'm always so tired and cranky due to all those hours lost, the delays, etc.

Re: What was the hardest thing to get used to???
I agree- the commute is the hardest to get used to!
We just moved from Manhattan to East Northport and my commute went up by an hour! But, I'm getting used to it and can now sleep all the way from Northport to Hunterspoint Ave- it's kind of cozy in a weird way getting on the train and knowing you can just sleep for an hour- but, getting up earlier is sooo hard for me and DH- we have to make an effort to go to sleep earlier and we haven't been too successful yet.
I don't really drive either but i've been able to get around on smaller roads- i'm still a little nervous about Jericho Tpke...i know, it's sad but i've always lived in the city and never really drove much

Please be careful!! Walking a 5 mile stretch all alone isn't a good idea.

OMG!!! I grew up here, and the sounds of robin red breasts every morning at 5am has me hanging out the window and throwing candles at the apple tree in the yard!! I need to get double pained sound proof windows for our new house!!
