Well, I posted this in my thread, but I was in a German class (all us musicians NEED to be fluent in every freaking language we can, apparently), and my father called me and told me to get in my car and come straight home. He said the whole family was ok, but that he was standing at the top of the tower in his school (he's a professor at Nassau Community College), and he said he could see the towers burning. My father fears nothing, and when I heard him crying, I knew I needed to get home. I told everyone what was going on, told the teacher off for not canceling class and left.

I can remember like yesterday also

I got to work a few minutes after the first plane crashed. Then a co-worker came to my office and said to put on www.cnn.com and there was a still picture of the building in flames. We were kind of like what kind of idiot could run into the WTC? I signed off and started to work then all hel l broke loose and the phones were ringing off the hook but I couldn't talk to them long enough to get any info until my bosses wife said we are 'under attack. two planes just flew into the WTC!'

I spent the rest of the morning and part of the afternoon trying to hold myself together and keep in touch with my DH, sister & mother until we cold all be home safely.

I was driving to work and saw smoke in front of me while I was on the highway (I work right near the city) but had no clue what it was.

I got to work, and it was on the TV.

I asked what is that? (in disbelief) and someone said, a plane hit the WTC!

I asked 'Where is the plane?'
They replied' Inside the building'

I was like

We then watched the 2nd plane hit and watched TV for hrs.

My stnking job made us work till 5:00

When i drove home on the GCP at 5pm, i was the ONLY car on it. When I went to get on the LIE Midtown tunnell, to go to my home, cops asked me why I was driving & where I was going. I had to show ID!

Then when I got home, my apartment stunk from the WTC. I live in Queens but 10-12 min away. I live where the firehouse lost the most guys in the WTC cause they got there so fast. tHEY LOST 19 MEN!

*edited to say DH & I lost 4 friends in the WTC

Trying to get in touch with FH who worked there. Thank GOD he was out campaigning for the primaries that day, I honestly believe that saved his life!
After he came home we went to give blood (but they didn't need it) and tried to get in touch with his mother who was freaking out in Spain. FH wasn't able to let her know he was OK and not there that day until about 4pm. His poor mom was in hysterics all day

My Mother also works at Nassau Community college on the 6th floor that faces the city. She was on the phone when the 1st plane hit all of a sudden she saw a giant fireball and just dropped the phone.

I haven't thought about this until now, but the night before, September 10th, JT and I had been at a Yankee/Red Sox game that got rained out, so we decided to drive through the city, and we passed the towers and I told him the story of my 8th birthday when my parents took me to the top of the towers. That was literally the only time I had gone by the WTC in YEARS. It's just so eery to think about.

My father just couldn't believe it that he could see so much. I just remember screaming at him to leave school and get home. Here he was telling me to go home and he wasn't moving.

I work very close to the WTC, all the commotion and the running and the chaos. I walked on the FDR towards the Bklyn Bridge in awe, as I watched the buildings on fire, then as we made it onto the bridge, watch the building fall, it was so surreal.

All I can say is thank God for the designers thinking of designing the building in such a way that they fell pancake style instead of toppling. Its a day I would never like to live thru again.

Roger was away on business, coming home filled with sut all over, to an empty house was not a nice feeling.

The reality of it all did not hit me until I got home and started watching it all on TV. While walking with my co-workers everyone kept saying aren't you scared?? I felt like I was having an out of body experience it did not feel real. I was not afraid at all, it was as if my body/mind shut down and I was on auto pilot just functioning.

Oh I cried and I was afraid of going back to work, but with prayers and faith, I survived. I do not want to attend anymore memorial services this year. Last year all I did was cry thru them.

Re: What were you doing on September 11,2001?

I was in class with my new 3 and 4 year olds when one of the parents that I had known since hs came running in asking if we had a tv. I asked what was wrong and she said a plane just crashed into the WTC and her husband was working there (local 3 electrician who was thank god fine..he went outside for coffee break literally 5 minutes before hand).

I couldnt leave my class so we got updates from my director. Once we heard about the second place we all knew right away but we couldnt watch or show any emotion because of the kids. I tried calling my dh but I couldnt get in touch with him and the last that I knew that morning was that he was supposed to be working in the WTC that day. I was freaking out and the only person I was able to get in touch with was my dad. My mom and sister were together food shopping when they heard the news. My brother was in school.

Finally my dh called me and said he was sent to another job first and that he was trying to get out of the city. I could hear all the commotion and everything in the background. I remember we took turns going in my directors office to watch footage and I stood there and watched the tower crumble and cried and cried.

My dh wound up driving out to pick me up cause I was so scared to drive home alone. When I got home, my whole family was there and we went on my roof (I live in Long ISland City very close to the city) and seeing total smoke. My mom and sister actually saw the people waving the white shirts and towels out the window from the roof earlier in the day.

It was and still is so surreal. The most horrific day of many of our lives if not all. I lost many people that day that I knew or were my acquaintances. God Bless them all now and forever!

Re: What were you doing on September 11,2001?

Steve and I had overslept that day and he had taken a later train than usual. I was at work when one of the girls who works for me came in and said'a plane just crashed into one of the towers' We then put on the TV and saw the second plane hit. My friend Max called me and asked if I had talked to Steve at all, whom I couldn't get on his cell phone. My sister then called me as I started to panic and she told me to calm down it is an accident I'm sure Steve is fine. Then they hit the Pentagon and I lost it and started screaming at her don't tell me to calm down. At this point no one had any idea as to what would be hit next and all I could think was that the LIRR could be a big target. Max came and took me home all the while I was calling Steve's cell phone and job. My sister works for the same company as STeve and e-mailed his boss who let her know he had never arrived. Steve finally called me from a payphone from the Lindenhurst train station at 2:30 where I raced to. The panic I felt was unlike any I have ever known and no one close to me perished, but I have friends and co-workers who did lose someone they cared about that day. My heart aches for them when I think about what they went through and are still going through.

Re: What were you doing on September 11,2001?

I was so scared when I got the news, while at work...I could not watch a Tv since we had none at wrok, and had to try to rely on he internet and phone calls every 5 minutes form my family until i decided I had enough...I drove straight home to get Dan and we drove to the NEw LOndon Ferry and went home to Long island...NY is where we needed to be....not in RI...Dans mom worked in teh city and we kept talki to his dad who had not heard form her, he said he was going to go out looking for her...we panicked until almost Midnight..when he finally called...she got a ride to teh ferry, took it to whereever it goes...is it NJ?? No clue...and he finally spotted her and thousands of others who took the ferry too...It was a long day for ALL...come 10OM, and she was not home yet, we were all prepared for the worst..Yikes!

Did anyone watch the Diane Sawyer Show with the 9/11 babies last year?? I sat there and BAWLED my eyes out for the entire show...I was addicted to the Newsday features of lost people for months and months...and cried with every story I read....and even till now, any time I read a story, I get teary eyed....I must admit, even though theya re saying 9/11 will be very safe with all the beefefd up security, I am still dreading this day coming....Will be relieved when its over....

Re: What were you doing on September 11,2001?

I was at work when my sister (in Atlanta) IMd me asking if I knew if Kate (our stepmom) was ok...b/c one of the towers was hit and she worked there, we just didn't know which tower. I thought it was a joke - I tried to contact my dad but the lines were down. I tried to get on news sites, but all the sites were jammed. Then she told me the second tower was hit.

I got in touch with my dad. He ran from his office building to Kate's...she worked in the first tower. He said the streets were empty and he freaked out b/c it just didn't seem right. He couldn't imagine how all those people had gotten out of the building - or how they would get out.

I didn't hear back from my dad - who hadn't heard from my stepmom as of 1pm that day - until 5:30 in the evening. She, along with coworkers, caught a ferry to SI...where she stayed with my uncle. She's a strong woman but the littlest things set her off in the weeks/months that followed. Like the morning she was looking for a pair of shoes and broke down in hysterics when she realized they had been in her desk.

In between trying to call my dad and sister...I was trying to get in touch with my mother's boyfriend of 12 years. He was one of 5 firefighters from his firehouse to respond that morning and at one point, all 5 were declared missing. In the end, Paul was the sole survivor of the 5 of them. Being there for him through every funeral and memorial service wasn't easy. It still isn't easy...

In between all of that I was in contact with my best friend from college. Apparently her uncle was in a breakfast meeting at Windows on the World that morning. He left behind a wife and two young boys. They had a memorial for him on St Patrick's day in 2002.

Re: What were you doing on September 11,2001?

Ill try to keep it short.. When the 1st plane hit I arrived at the World Trade Center.. saw people screaming & running & total confusion. I had been promoted the day before so I wanted to check in.. but none of hte phones worked in my office at 2 WTC. I took the subway tunnel to Church & Vessey.. fireman helped us get across the street.

I was outside talking to my now FH trying to say that there was no way that was an airplane.. the hole was too big.... I had just gotten off the phone with my dad saying 'no matter what you hear on TV, im fine.. ppl are freaking out but I dont know why.. its just a fire'.. then... people... well you dont need to know. I was screaming each time one jumped.. FH had no clue if I was ok or not.. I hung up to try to call my dad to snap me out of it when the 2nd one came.. hit my building.. All hell broke loose. I remember trying to run.. falling.. getting up and then getting pushed down to the ground and not being able to get up. I stayed on the ground praying no one would break my legs so I could run.. then it stopped. Someone helped me up. I limped away .. smoked a half a pack of cigarettes (I quit about six months earlier and havent had one since).. all sorts of stuff happened from then. I got home the next day. Took weeks before I confirmed my friend was dead, but my officemates were alive.

Took 7 hrs to get a hold of my father. 2 yrs later, after surgery, im still fighting with my injuries and that's just the way it has to be.

Re: What were you doing on September 11,2001?

I got out of the subway on Houston and Varick and a messenger was riding by on his bike and he said that a plane hit the WTC. I remember saying outloud 'like NYC needs something more to screw us up'. I walked down the street to my office building on Hudson and King and went up to the 14th flr where my division is. I found two co-workers staring out the window of another co-worker's office. The windows in our dept face south with a clear view of what was then the towers, now Ground Zero. I watched the building begin to burn and then gasped as I saw the second plane hit. I stared for a while and then went back to my desk and turned on my computer. Fh (who was just a friend at that point) has left me a message telling me what he heard on the news. I tried to call him back, but the phone were't working. Instead I e-mailed him and my brother (so he could call my mom and let her know I was okay). Then I heard some co-workers shrieking. A tower had come down. Then I ran our president's office where we all piled in on her couch and at her table and chairs and we listened to the news while we watched the next tower fall. We all cried and some people left to try to get in touch with family members. I went back to my desk and continued to e-mail FH and my brother until we were told to leave the building. A very nice co-worker who lived 4 block away invited a bunch of us to go to her appt for the day and by 7Pm I was able to get a train home. Since our office building is below 14th St, we were closed for a few days. I will never forget the feeling of helplessness as I wanted to reach through the windows and stop time. We were so far away, yet so close.
