What were your childhood hobbies?

What were your childhood hobbies?

I remember having something to do after school every day of the week! My poor mother used to have to shuttle us around all the time.

But, I was a baton girl for most of my elementary years! 12 years of baton twirling lessonds! You'd think I'd be better at it

I also took jazz, tap and ballet.

Childhood activities: I tried everything at one point, it seems. Dance for 7 years (tap, jazz, ballet), piano lessons, tennis lessons, gymnastics, drama classes. I wasn't good at any of them, except maybe drama.

Childhood hobbies: Reading, collecting stickers, collecting stationary and writing letters, riding my bike.

Re: What were your childhood hobbies?

i was an only child, so i had to find a lot to do, so barbies were HUGE!!! and i had a giant chalkboard in the basement so i played school everyday too (i even took roll for my invisible kids!)
i played gift wrapper during the holidays
i danced (ballet until i was 18 or 19)
i was interviewed by oprah and phil donahue weekly (when i was going thru my wanting to be an actress stage, which was a number of years!)
i made crosses out of twigs and straws when i went through my wanting to be a nun stage (which was a week )
i had an invisible estate in my backyard in which to play house...basically, i outlined a house with dead twigs and had the best house!!!
nailpolish and crimping hair were big, too!
there was my dog...she was my hobby
i made giant soap bubbles in the summer and tie dyed clothing
i had fun...i will admit my childhood was simple but a $h!tload of fun!!!

Well, I played the flute (badly) for 10 years, but I spent my childhood with a box of legos, because I wanted to be an architect, and then I had a ton of art supplies (pastels, colored pencils, watercolors) because i also wanted to be an artist. There was phase when I wanted to be a comic book artist and I created a whole series of superheroes and supervillians with really elaborate powers and backstories. And then I took a poetry class when I was 11 and I've been writing (badly) ever since.

I also tormented my brothers. Constantly. I'm surprised my little brother isn't in therapy at this point.

I played softball for a few years at HBQVB in Bellerose and I went to painting school. I loved to oil paint.

I'm very sad reading this thinking about what all the kids of today miss out on. Oh well...Things are just different now.

coloring, drawing, bike riding, skating, Brownies.

eta : I remember I was out ALL day....from morning to night....my Mom had to call me in for lunch & dinner. Now kids sit in front of the TV.

I was just thinking about this today '- remember we used to say 'I'm going to 'call for' Mary? And run and ring the bell of your friends house for them to come out? Do kids do that anymore?

bmd, i totally agree. it is all about nintendo and tamagatchi. although a lot of my kids love origami, but still, there isn't an art curriculum in my school, so you can imagine what else they are missing out on.

Jen, I fully agree. That is all we used to do: run to our friends houses and ring their bell for them to 'come out.'

The same thing...we'd leave after breakfast in the summer/weekends and then wouldn't come in until we heard our moms literally 'call us in' for dinner. It was just a different world back then I guess. Moms didn't worry (or have to) and our friends' moms had permission to spank us or yell and we had sleepovers and friends over for dinner.

We had shows we put on for neighborhood kids and carnivals in our driveways. We would do contests to try to get into the Guiness Book of World Records (see saw, jumping rope, pogo stick, chewing gum).

It's sad that our kids won't have these same things

I guess I phrased that wrong....

I meant parents let their kids out all day & knew we were in good hands at our friends' houses or playing in the park.

Re: spanking....

I know one time my friend & I stuck gum in my friend's sister's hair (it had to be cut, peanut butter didn't work). My mom had given my friend's mom permission to spank me---not that they ever did.

Maybe discipline is a better word. This was the 70's & I know that if my friend's got in trouble & I was there, I'd get yelled at just the same.

I took tennis lesosns from 9-17 (you'd think I'd be good, NOT).

Also gymnastics lessons for a while and couldn't afford skating lessons but really wanted to be a skater.

I don't know if I had any HOBBIES ... my brother & I spent a lot of time at my aunt & uncle's (actually my father's Aunt & Uncle) and there we baked a lot and did artsy stuff - she was really great at that. Now she actually does all the art/decorating for the holidays at the facility she lives in. She's the reason I can make a mean Pinocchio costume from scratch.

My father worked in a school so had summers off and we did a lot of *boy* things ... my brother ended up playing varsity baseball at BU but there was a time when I was maybe 7 or so that I was a better batter than him! We spent a lot of time at the batting cages (that I think were over by where Adventures Inn was - or maybe I'm thinking of the mini golf )

Same here. I wasn't in Brownies but I rode my bike til the tires were bald, roller skated, had lemonade stands, played slip and slide. My friend down the block Mary had a pool and a swing set so I was always over there. We played 'mermaids' in her pool, we used to pretend we were married to the duke boys and we drove the general lee. We'd have climbing contests on her swingset, play supermarket, etc. My mom garbage picked this huge supermarket stand thing once and we played for hours in it. We used to catch fireflies and watch fireworks from the back of her house (she faced the Jr. High's field). I used to ride to the edge of the block and 'ring' my bike bell for her come out. She lived on the other block and she would do the same to 'contact' me (we weren't allowed to cross the street). Those were back in the days where Mom would cross me, watch me walk the whole five houses to her house, etc. Nowadays, the kids are running around on their own at such early ages. It's a very different time

Re: What were your childhood hobbies?

I was, and still am, an avid reader. I would read the back of the Cherrios box and breakfast. I loved Barbies and playing house (which we changed to college dorm, because we thought it sounded cooler) with my childhood best friend.

Horses were also a childhood hobby/obsession. I still ride and still love them, but at 10 or 11 yo I was at the barn ALL THE TIME. We would walk or ride our bikes there and spend all Saturday there or go after school and not come home until dinner time.

I have to admit, I don't miss high school but I do miss elementary school days.
