Do you get a fine? do you have to take the written and road test all over again. A friend of mine didn't renew on their Birthday and hasn't had a new one for like 5 months.

Anyone know???

I think you would get a ticket and points on your license

She needs to go get it renewed now. I think they fine you, but if you wait too long they can pull your insurance & then they revoke your license & you cannot reapply for one for months, sometimes years.

I would go as soon as possible, but according to the DMV site:
You can renew a driver license no more than one year before the expiration date, or no more than two years after the expiration date.

Maybe you can find more information here.

Found this on DMV

If Your Driver License or Your Learner Permit Expires
If your driver license or your learner permit expires, you cannot drive. Do not drive after the expiration date.

If your driver license or your learner permit is expired for two years or more, you cannot renew your driver license. There are no exceptions. You must apply for an original license. You must pass the vision test, the written test, and the road test, and complete a pre-licensing course. To apply, use these instructions.

If your driver license is expired for less than two years, use the instructions that appear above to renew your document. If you renew after your driver license expires, the expiration date of your driver license and the renewal fees do not change.

If you use an expired driver license to drive and you get a traffic ticket, you will receive fines and penalties.

60 days or less after the expiration date: a fine of $25 to $40, plus state and local surcharges.
60 days or more after the expiration date: a fine of $75 to $300, plus state and local surcharges.

Please please please tell her to renew it!!!

DH didn't think he needed to renew his license since he was living in manhattan without a car...

well just before the 2 year mark we went to renew it...and thought everything was fine...until a few months later he never got it - b/c he had some past tickets -

he had to start ALL OVER...permit test...driver's test...he is even listed as an inexperienced driver on our insurance!!!! I can't bare to type how much we pay!!!

He did get pulled over during the time we were trying to straighten it out (go figure...twice!!! - but I still love him and haven't killed him) and once the guy let him go b/c it was expired...not suspended...and the other time he got a 2 point ticket!!!! (of course in addition to the speeding ticket )

they are supposed to send you the renewal in the mail before your birthday....they might not have sent it because her license was suspended (that's what happened to me...now I have to turn in my plates, blah blah blah....)
