My FH and I don't want to request black tie optional on our invitations. We don't want to make people feel put upon or make them feel that this is a snooty wedding. However, we really would prefer that men wear nice dress pants and jackets and be more dressed up than just a pair of nice khakis and a button-down shirt. How do we request this without using the phrase 'black tie optional'?
Has anyone ever seen 'jackets required' or 'formal affair' or something similar on an invitation? What do you think of something like that??
Thanks!

Re: What Will My Guests Wear?????
people will wear what they're going to wear. dont worry about that on your wedding day. i could care less what my guests wore as long as they weren't in jeans. i would never put that on an invitation as i don't think it's necessary or appropriate. day or night, oheka or WM--it's still a wedding and people will dress how they're going to dress

I think 'black tie optional' sounds the least snooty out of 'jackets required' or 'formal affair'... IMO. I think black tie optional sounds perfect and I don't think people will feel put out or like they are going to this super formal fancy shmancy affari, ya know.

Re: What Will My Guests Wear?????
I had my ceremony at the hall and then wrote 'Cocktails and Formal Reception to follow'.
It was at a country club so I kinda assumed people would know to dress nice but I wanted to make sure just in case!!
I don't think you really have to worry about that tho, most people know to dress nice for a wedding. I still had 1 guest that wasn't dressed up and although his excuse wasn't justified I really didn't let it ruin my day!!

Re: What Will My Guests Wear?????
We are having an eparty at a restaurant- it's a really nice- very dressy restaurant- but unless you've been there you wouldn't know- we went back and forth how to get this across- it is a cocktail party- we were going to write 'Cocktail Attire' but if you google that it says dark suits for men- short- wedding type dresses for women- we didn't want it to be THAT fancy--so we wrote 'Jackets Preffered' on our invites to give people an idea- We figure women will wear nice pants out fit or a skirt or dress& men will wear sports coats- we're just trying to avoid the khakis & polo thing-- I would rather someone tell me how to dress- cause there's nothing worse than not knowing! (especially when it's not your family or friends- who do you ask?!?) I know none of my guests would actually tell me if they think it's obnoxious- but a few people have said that they appriciate that we gave them an idea- a restaurant can be super casual & I didn't want anyone to feel out of place. But-- yours is a wedding- people will know to dress nicely... I would hope! We plan on having 'Black tie optional' on our wedding invites- Even if at first glance people would be put off by that- don't you think they'd feel more uncomfortable being the person in the Khakis & Polo next to the guy who knew how to dress & is wearing a dark suit??
