I found some jobs I want to apply for, but I'm worried about having to tell a potential employer that I'm getting married in a month! Has anyone else been in this situation, and if so, what did you do? Should I be honest about it and tell them about it up front? I can understand if they wouldn't want to wait for someone to start in May, but maybe if they're interested in me they would?
I don't know...feeling a little uncertain about this. Any advice?

hmmmmmmmmm........that is a bit difficult. I suppose if you don't tell the current employer and wait for the response the potential there is no harm done, If they hire you knowing the facts then its all good but if they voice some concern about it, your curretn employment stays in tact. A month is a relatively short time though........but it depends on the company size alot of the time. I say give it a shot, it couldn't hurt, but definitely don't lie.

Re: What would you do?
The one plus for me in this situation is that my bosses here already know I am leaving, so I don’t have to worry about them finding out I am looking. Basically, I am going to be leaving here to get married, and not coming back after the HM. My concern with applying to a job that I’m interested in before the wedding is, do I start right off the bat with “Just want you to know I am getting married in 4 weeks” or should I interview with the person, get a feel for the situation, and if anything seems to be developing (second interview, etc) then I could say the whole bit about getting married. I just don’t want to be dishonest, but at the same time I don’t want to ruin my chances of getting a job by sharing my information too soon in the interview process…

I'm in the same position... i want to start looking for a job now but im afraid they won't hold a job for me. I was planning on looking after i come back from the honeymoon... but it would be nice to not have to come back here! I NEED to get the h e l l out of this place!!! i am SOOOO close to just walking out right now!!!
but i think if you see it has potential and they like you, i would be honest. I'm sure they would appreciate it, and would probably not have a problem with it.

Good luck to you! Hopefully we'll both find something better soon...
Thanks for the advice!

Re: What would you do?
It really depends what type of job you want to land. Is this a full-time long term position? Or is it a small 6 month contract gig. If it's contract work then I would think applying for a short term assignment would be fruitless, as they would expect you to hit the ground running and then some. If it is a long term prospect, they would be 'investing' in you, and two weeks is not going to make or break the deal.
In some cases the application process is a long, drawn out procedure. I have been in situations where it took 3 months to get through interviews! Apply now, secure a position, and when it comes time to accept an offer, your wedding plans will take part in the negotiation. You may find that you will be married before any of this happens!
Good luck! Start searching...

Re: What would you do?
Could you just say to your interviewer that you are unable to start until May XX? Then if they question it, you can explain the situation...
I don't know. This is a toughie!
ETA: Good luck!!

definitely the latter... i understand your desire to be honest, but stating it upfront may come off as you having 'wedding on the brain' and not work. when dealing with this situation, i would make sure to give the impression that work comes first and that wedding plans are already taken care of... i would not draw any more attention to the wedding as necessary.

I wouldn't worry and I wouldn't mention it until you have a job offer. Most places will bring you in for a couple of interviews, which usually take at least a couple of weeks to complete and then they have to provide you with at least two weeks to provide your current employer with notice.
Get through the interview first and then worry about your starting date. Plus, if they like you enough, they should be willing to wait a few extra weeks for you.

This is true – no need to tell them until it’s important. And if what some of you have said is true about the interview process, I might not even have to tell them about getting married at all.
Thanks everyone. Here’s hoping I actually get called back for some interviews!

Re: What would you do?
I am in a similar situation. I would like to look for a new job but I am trying to get pregnant. I would feel so guilty if I started someplace new and say, Sorry, I'll be gone for 2 months...
