No way would I get the document for him. If he needed it he could have left with it himself. Stick to your guns on this. You don't want to be terminated for stealing. That would be what you would be terminated for if you got caught.

Re: What would you do?
My company just had everyone go through mandatory ethics training and this was a big part of it. under no circumstances should you send him anything that is proprietary information. Not only can you and he both lose your jobs, you’d be breaking the law and can have charges brought against you.
don't do it

I would tell your friend that you want to help them out but you don't feel comfortable sending company info out. If he still presses you, tell him that you want to run it by your boss first. If you boss says it is ok, then you will send it to your friend.

Thanks ladies - it is good to get feedback.
I will bite the bullet the next timeI talk to him and tell him I don't feel comfortable doing it - friendship or not.

Re: What would you do?
If it's something like an Excel file or a Query that he wants for the format...or a letter for the format, I would send it to him. But if it's something pertaining to the way your company does business, I wouldn't.

Re: What would you do?
since you feel uneasy about it then you should not do it. it'll not only compromise your company's ehtics but your's as well. it's not fair that he put you in such an uncomfortable position. i would tell him how you feel. if he's as close as you say he is he would understand and back off.

Re: What would you do?
Put it to him simply, tell him that he's putting you in a awkward situation and that as a former employee of the company he should know that what he is asking is wrong. Don't change your morals for a friend, bc someone who would ask you to do that isn't much of a friend anyway. You need to do what you know is right, usually if you have to question it then you already know something's wrong. It's one thing to make friends at work, but you have to keep your personal feelings separate from your professional duties and obligations.
