Ok here's the dilemma- I booked my church - it is the church that I received ALL of my sacraments in, the church of the school I went to and where my parents got married. But - it is very ugly - unimaginably ugly. Right now they have these ugly green banners hanging up. Its just very plain.
FH and I were thinking of having it in another church - about 10 to 15 minutes away. Its is very beautiful and more cathedral-like.
What are your opinion? would you keep it at the church or re-books somewhere else.

Re: What would you do??
I would keep the church...
Did you ever read Wuthering Heights?
'my love resembles the eternal rocks beneath - a source of little visible delight, but necessary.'
Of course I happen to be a very emotional and sentimental person, and beauty means far less to me than the sentiment.

Re: What would you do??
thats a hard one. luckily the church I go to is gorgeous, just was renovated within the last 10 years. but if it wasnt renovated, I think i would still get married there - its my church, i dont think i could get married in a church I never attended, jmo

Re: What would you do??
It would be nice to have it at the church you had all your sacraments, can't you decorate it? The pews (with tool) and have flower's, i'm sure the church wouldn't look so plain then.

even decorated it is ugly - part of me wants t stay because it is meaningful but the other part wants to go cause its not part of my 'wedding vision' lol - hope i dont sound too bridezilla-ish

Re: What would you do??
Is there hope that they'll renovate it anytime soon? Maybe a few small changes would make it much better. If it's THAT ugly, I'd just look for another church... but some don't let you get married there if you're not a parishoner right??

Re: What would you do??
i have to say, keep your original church. it has so much significance for your family as it is... why not continue the tradition? you can always bring flowers in and decorate the pews, etc. my feeling on the whole thing is what's more important: receiving the sacrament or having a 'pretty' church??? it's receiving the sacrament and i think you should do it in a place that has been special to you and your family....

I would keep the church. . .but that partly has to do with the fact that I have the same dilemma!
If it's any consolation Jen I heard Fr. Gibino is trying to renovate the place. Right now he's trying to raise money for new doors. So I'm hoping people will start to donate more and he'll be able to make some nice improvements before we get married!

Great analogy. I agree. Stick with the original church.

i already had my grandma say something ! haha
i mean..im not really about the church being spectacular...that is what the reception is for just my opinion....
but if u think its gonna bother u..go with OLPH or NAtivity...they are gorgeous...
im just kinda feeling bad if I didnt do it there since I had all my sacraments there. bc if any church needs my money it is that one! hahaha

Re: What would you do??
i say keep the church, i actually had people make a few comments about my church, it was originally a basement and they never built up so you go down stairs to go into the church, but it is pretty inside, people do comment when a church is gorgeous, but i don't think they do when its not, its about the two of you getting married,
also what are the green banners for, sometimes the school children put things up, or according to the season but it is usually just temporary, maybe try to find out how long the banners will be up for
also is this olg in brooklyn, cause i've been to a wedding there, and really don't remember it being so ugly, people just don't remeber that kind of thing

Re: What would you do??
well i am definitely biased on this one!
honestly, i know how you feel about it bc we have talked about it even before we were engaged! but, i dont think its that ugly. . .i just dont see it - i agree that it is very plain and simple - but it just holds so much meaning! we have pictures there from baptism to communion etc. . . i even have pics of my brother and sister getting baptism there over 30 yrs ago!
also, if you look at my cousin's pictures - it really is amazing. . . it just looks very bright and clean and it is a nice simple background for the pics
BUT if you think that it is going to bother you - dont let it be something that you are worried about for the next year! check out some other churches and see how you feel!
I know that i have sat in those pews for over twenty years and pictures myself getting married there -so i think that is why i can look past the 'plainness' of the church!
also - since your grandpa is a deacon there, , , would he be upset if you picked another church??

I say keep the original church. There seems to be quite a bit of history for your family in this church.

Well, I am the 'odd' one in the bunch... I say GO TO THE BEAUTIFUL CHURCH.
Honestly, if you are posting on the topic, you must have thought about it..... and yes, it does bother you that it is ugly.
No, you are not vain.
A church is a church.... you will be married in the eyes of God in every church.
I know plenty of people who celebrated in Cathedrale style church for their wedding because the church and grounds were beautiful. They still go to their regular church for services. It just made it so special to be in a gorgeous place.
