Ok, so I really do get along with FMIL, but sometimes she says things that make me go Here's the situation...........
she just called me and apparently she's looking at my registry, she says 'didn't you originally want the copper bottom pots & pans??', and I was like, yeah but the ones All Clad makes are really expensive. So then she's like 'well I'm looking at the Macy's circular, and they have Emerilware copper bottom pots on sale, can I get you those instead of what you registered for?'. I registered for All Clad Stainless Steel 10 pc set, I know its expensive ($600 something) but its what I picked. The set she's considering I think is 10 pieces and its between $200-$300.
So for me, this isn't about how much it costs, but what about the quality???? Does anyone have an Emerilware set?? Particularly the copper bottom pots? If its good quality (I checked online and it says these are also made by All Clad), then maybe I'll just tell her to get them.
BTW, she also said she might order my Pfaltzgraf set directly through them, instead of through Fortunoff, I have no idea why!! I guess I'll be making some returns if I have duplicates!!!
So, what would you do- let her get the ones she wants to buy us? Or stick to the pots I originally picked?

Re: What would you do? FMIL issue
hmm tough one... if its made by all -clad, than it shouldnt be so bad.
do you think there is anyone in your family or possibly bridal party that would buy you the more expensive all clad set? if you dont think anyone would get it, than maybe have your fmil get the emerilware...

don't know about the emeril pots, but I registered for the pfaltzgraff dishes also and they are cheaper if you order directly through them. Of course i saw that after someone had already bought them...lol,maybe she is trying to save some $$$?

I agree. Unless you think someone else will purchase them then I would stick with the registry. If not then let her buy them for you. I'm pretty sure Consumer Reports tested these out. You could always do a little research first. I would even check them out in the store and see the actually difference.
If not you could always return them and get the all clad that you really wanted. Just pay the difference

Actually.....FMIL ALWAYS buys the pots & pans for her sons (this is her 5th child getting married and she just has a thing about the pots, she likes to be the one to buy them). I really do appreciate it, b/c its a nice gift, and when I put the more expensive set on there, I just figured that maybe FMIL and some of the SIL's would chip in. But maybe it's better just to give in and let her get them. thanks for your advice!!

thanks!! yeah it's probably b/c they're a little less, which I can't blame her.....but I'm leaving the 12 place settings on Fortunoff, b/c I won't know how many she'd be getting us....I'll just return whatever is extra.

Re: What would you do? FMIL issue
also, regarding the plates- let her buy them where they are cheaper, just make sure she takes it off the registry.
she can call in and say that she purchased from the store and forgot to take it off the registry..
edited to say: just make sure you are happy with the emrilware- dont settle! i suggest going to the store and speaking with someone from the dept. maybe step down from allclad to caphalon. caphalon has great quality pots and pans! sometimes i am weary of chef line kitchen items.. so def. speak to someone b4 you settle.

That's a toughie Helen! What I do know is that my brother is a chef and his pots are All-Clad. So, if they are the ones that make them, then I don't think you can go wrong! I would track down All-Clad's customer service # and talk to someone about the difference between their regular sets and the Emeril ones. If you like the look of the pots and pans, then I'd go for it. Especially since you wanted the copper bottom to begin with! HTH! Here are some for dealing with FMIL!!

I don't know about the Pots. But if anyone buys anything at a place other than where you registered, just call and have them taken off. My aunt bought my flatware from the manufacturer instead of through Fortunoff. My mom got the dishes from our bridal party at BBB instead of Fortunoff. And we just called Fortunoff and had them taken off the registry.

I'm ot sure what to suggest re: the pots ... but in my opinion you can never really have too many dishes! I'd probably keep however many sets I ended up with.

Gotta love FMILs!!!! Can you go to Macy's and check them out? If you feel like taking a trip to Staten Island we can go to the mall!!!! An excuse to see you And why is she telling you what she is getting you?!?!? It's supposed to be a SURPRISE!!!!!

hmm...sound so familiar..FMIL is like that to me all the time. She also like to bring/buy us tchotchkes....she assume that we will take all her crap that she no longer use and instead of asking she will just bring it to our apt and start re-arranging my whole apt..ugh I guess its better than getting nag at.

i did a search on epinions and most of the ratings for the Emerilware are great the two complaints were they were too heavy and not easy to clean ( i think you will find this with anything besides a non stick product)
as far as getting doubles since she isn't buying them from Fortunoff--- she can call Fortunoff and tell them she purchased them elsewhere and it will be updated on your registry to purchased. One of my guests did that-- I found out when I went to return and I was told they hadn't purchased it from Fortunoff!

wow!! yeah you have a point, geting chotchkes is better then being nagged, but still, giving someone things that are really YOUR (as in FMIL's) taste instead of theirs can be a little rude. I guess she means well!! Just rearrange it back after she leaves!!

thanks so much!! yeah FH's brother got Emerilware pots and their main complaint is that they are heavy....but I think the All Clad pots I picked were heavy too (I told FH he will be the only one who will be able to wash them since they're too heavy for me lol!!)
