What would you do if you got a job in a different place than your FH?

We are both interviewing for jobs in all sorts of places, both of us with very good prospects. Just wondering how you girls would react in this situation.

what are your long term goals? are you thinking of having kids and staying home? would FH/DH have to be the sole bread winner at any point in time? are your salaries comparable or is there quite a disparity? is the income potential the same or is there a difference (degrees and industry play a role)?

i know for us DH's job will dictate where we go and what we do. my current salary is minimal compared to his so we need to focus on his career more than mine. if my career was where it was 3/4 years ago then it would be more of an issue, right now what's best for DH is best for the family...

See that is the thing. He would probably make more money than me, but it is harder for me to find a job in my industry. As for kids, staying home depends on income and such.

I think you need to make life decisions, and they will dictate where you are willing to go. I live in Huntington, but work 2.5 hours away in NJ - and I'm willing to do the commute (every day) because my salary far exceeds my FI - but I know his happiness is being close to the water where he can easily take the boat out - - - and knowing that he's happy makes me happy!

That really depends on the situation. I have gotten calls about jobs in NJ & LI but FI and I both live in BK.

FI runs his brother's property management company and has for years. His brother moved about 2 hours away but does come to NY sometimes to take care of the business, especially when FI and I are on a vacation. So, FI can't really move to far unless he gets another job working for someone or some company - which I do not want.

I have not pursued any other jobs since I know FI can't move and I am not willing to commute for 2 hours (or even 1 hour) each way per day even if it does mean a regular schedule - maybe even set hours like 9 - 6 which I currently do not have and likely will never have at my firm.
