What would you do in this situation?

What would you do in this situation?

Okay, DH and I live in a one bedroom apartment for the past 4 years! Our landlord is now selling his house! He has given us fair warning, and we have until September to move out. But if it goes sooner, he is trying to keep us in the apartment as long as he can. I am getting really tired of all these strange people coming in my apartment, looking around, opening closets etc.... because they are interested in buying the house. I have to now clean up the house and do the dishes everyday! Because I don't want these people to think that we are pigs! Not to mention the boxes all over the apartment because of the bridal shower!

I want to get out ASAP! Our really good friends just bought a house with a one bedroom basement apartment in it. And we are more than welcome to move in there! But they can't get in the house until August 1st! And we haven't even seen it yet or discussed the price! I know they will be kind! I am just scared to ruin our friendship! I have been getting mixed feedback! Some people say to DO IT! Because you can save money for a few years, then buy a house of our own. Some people say DON'T DO IT! Because It will ruin your friendship!

What should we do? No decisions will be made until we see the apartment! Neither of us are too happy about living in a basement unless it is GORGEOUS! and has big windows!s

When it comes to renting... take any good deal you can find. I don't see a major issue in living in a friend's basement. Its not the same thing as living in the same apartment (floor).

As far as cleaning everyday so your landlord can show the apartment.... yes its a pain to keep the place clean.

However... I would definitely show some courtesy to your current landlord when it comes to showing the apartment. You should be happy he gave you plenty of advance notice. By law... the landlord only has to give you 30 days notice in writing. He is giving you 4+ months!

I am also sure he has a clause in his lease saying if he needs to show the apartment, he can under reasonable circumstances. After all... he gave you a home and you have lived there for four years. Remember... when it comes to renting... landlords like to see references from previous landlords. Do your current landlord the favor now, and I am sure he would return the favor when you need a reference.

Ya know what I mean?

Good luck with the new place.

You should be okay taking the friends apartment, but the flip side is that you should just let the landlord show the apt. Before I met FI, I was living in an apt. and the owner was selling the house. When the house finally sold, the new owners kept me as a tenant, at the same rent. They knew I was a good tenant based on the landlords references and figured it was better to keep someone they could trust. I stayed in that apt. until I met DH.

The question here is how good of friends are you? This should be treated as a business transaction first and friends second. I can relate your situation with lending money to a friend. Before you do it, no big deal. But after it is done things can become messy and ruin a relationship. I am sure you will think things through and make a decision you are comfortable with. Good luck.

Also have you thought about the possiblility that whoever buys the house might want to let you stay? That they also might want the rental income. I know that we ran into houses that had apartments with tenants. The Real Estate agent would say, the tenant would like to stay or the tenant is leaving on such and such date.

I think that as long as you are a respectful tennant and pay your rent on time you should never have a problem remaining friends.
Most people would rather rent ot someone they know rather then a stranger.

As long as you know you'll be a good tennant I don't see any problems. It really sounds like a win win for both you and your friend.
