What would you do? (Long)

What would you do? (Long)

I'm from San Diego and have a lot of family here, but am getting married in LI in June 2005. Although e-parties are not popular here (in SD), I know we will have 1 in LI and I don't want my family/friends here to feel left out (they already feel that way somewhat since it's tradition to get married in bride's hometown). Also, FI and I will be moving back to NY within the next 6 months, so I thought it would be nice to throw a small, informal e-party before we left to get everyone together before the move. Now it looks 95% sure FI will be moving at end of January, then I will join him in the beginning of June after my grad school graduation, so I was thinking we could do it right before he left.

Here's where the dilemna comes in. My dad is in the hospital recovering from a gastric bypass, and my godfather/uncle who I cherish and who's been battling AIDS for a very long time has just been diagnosed with brain cancer and given only 2-4 months to live. He lives in Dallas, and we're trying to get him back to SD to be with his family for his last few months. On the one hand, I feel like having the party now would be bad timing and selfish. On the other hand, it would kind of be nice to share it with my godfather since it doesn't seem he will be able to share in my wedding day (I wanted him to do a reading). The other options are not to have one in SD at all, or to have one at the end of May right before I leave (FI would come back to SD to help me move), but that will come very close to the graduation party I know my parents will want to throw me. What would you do?

I'd appreciate anyone's feedback, please!

Can your uncle come if you have the small eparty in SD?

I say have it now. It will mean alot to him to know that you did it so you can share that with him since he won't make it to the wedding. Also, it will be a good diversion for him. Something to look froward to, besides the inevitable. It might even help cheer him up a little. And what better way to get together with all the family and friends than for a wonderful celebration?

I would try to get him to SD. I agree with Smolokoff that it would cheer him up being around family for such a joyus occation.

But here is a hug for you and your family. You are going through so much..
