What would you do? (please vote)

What would you do? (please vote)

I am going to pick up my dress tomorrow (it was an off-the-rack deal) and don't want to just keep it at the bridal salon paid in full. I had thought I would preserve the dress, but I asked the bridal salon what they thought and they just said as long as I keep it in an opaque bag in a closet away from light (I was right light is bad for it) it should be fine...that is how THEY store it. I am still nervous though. It was expensive and I love that dress and I don't want anything to happen to it. Would you just trust the bridal salon's advice or would you get it perserved. My wedding is over a year away!

Can't the salon keep it for a little while longer?? If not then I would just go by their advice.

I was going to ask the same thing! My wedding in June '06, just ordere my gown last week ( ), and they anticipate it coming in in 6 mos (maybe less). They assured me that they can and will store it there at no cost (uh, yeah!) no me.

I am keeping mine in a dark closet away from light when mine comes in. I think that if they store it that way, then it should be fine for you too

Well, I have heard horror stories (which I am sure are rare) about gowns getting lost, salons burning down, salons going out of business and are never heard from again. I think I would feel better having it in my hands (just in case). I would assume the salon knows what they are talking about...they deal w/ dresses all the time, right?

ETA: I am not sure if anyone remembers but they told me months ago that I could pay it off slowly and I could keep it there. When I called back a few weeks later I had spoken to the manager and she said that wasn't their policy, but because I was told that I could keep the dress there. Nothing against the salon, it was just a miscommunication. I would just feel better knowing that it is safe at home...w/ me

I actually have mine in a garment bag in the closet.

I'm storing mine at the salon. And I'm not paying in full until I pick it up. If you're really that nervous about that tho, just follow their advice. Many brides do that and it comes out fine!

I kept mine wrapped in a white sheet in the bag, slightly opened, in a closet. It was there for 9 months and was fine.

I kept mine in my 90 year old aunts closet. I knew she didn't smoke or cook so no odors would get into it. I also had it wrapped in a big while sheet, like they told me, and in a garment bag with the zipper left a tiny bit open at the bottom to allow some air in. Good Luck, I am sure it will be fine at home!!

What material is the bag made out of? I bought my dress at a sample sale and stored it at my mother's house in the fabric bag the designers provided for six months.

I don't think I would spend the money the money on preserving it. I would follow their directions and maybe check on it avery month or so.

I wouldn't get it preserved, what if the chemical has a reaction to your skin?

Food for thought.....

Re: What would you do? (please vote)

You know, I never even thought about the chemicals...good point! I actually spoke to a friend of mine at work that used to be in the wedding business. She suggested also that I put in the closet in the garment bag (I have seen it before, but I am not sure what kind of material it is), but also put a white sheet or blanket over it too just to make sure nothing gets in. I am so relieved that most of you agree that the garment bag should be fine. So I wonder if I should pick it up on friday the 13th?

I would take it home...I was told mine would take 3-4mths to come in and it only took 4wks..I was afraid that others would try it on...b/c i'm paranoid......if you can take it home why not???

I was thinking that too, since I know I would have a reaction. I have a reaction to everything!

I would leave it at the salon, that way if god forbid ANYTHING happened to it they would be responsible. Thats what Im doing. I paid it in full when I picked it out and also bought mine off the rack. Im just afraid something could happen here like a fire, theft - you never ever know. I also dont want to lug it back and forth for fittings.

Good Luck.

don't have it preserved. if your wedding was 3 or more years from now, I would say have it preserved.

they put a stinky chemical on your gown when they preserve it and then you'll have to get it professionally cleaned when you take it out. it will end up costing you several hundred $$$

I picked up my dress well over a year before my wedding. i kept it at my mother's in a opaque bag which I purchased at the salon and made sure the zipper was partially unzipped. The dress was fine when I brought it back in to the salon to have it pressed for my wedding day.
