What would you do? (warning...LONG vent)

What would you do? (warning...LONG vent)

Ok ladies, I need some help here.

I have two old friends from college who I absolutely ADORE. One was my roommate freshman year, sorority sister, and we were on two dance teams together. Love her to death and she has already been informed that she's going to be a bridesmaid. She's super excited for me and ecstatic to be a BM. Keep in mind, she lives in California, but is going to make it a point to stay involved even from across the country.

The other was my next door neighbor freshman year, and roommate junior and senior years. I also love her to death, but she's kind of flaky and VERY unreliable. She lives in Connecticut so is still kinda far, but MUCH closer.

When we were in college we always talked about being in each other's bridal parties, so I had automatically assumed I would be asking her as well. However, now that I'm engaged, she doesn't seem too excited. I got engaged on December 20, and on January 2, the three of us were supposed to meet up (we usually do about once a year around the holidays) and celebrate. Well she canceled on us at the very last minute. I mean like we were supposed to get together at 7 and she canceled at 1. So we never got to see each other. I told her to make sure she was available to come for my engagement party though, and she said absolutely.

Well now my engagement party rolls around. It's set for February 15, the day after Valentine's. Also, her birthday is on Valentine's. Well she never responded until I sent her an email asking if she was coming. She told me she doesn't think she can b/c her boyfriend is taking her to Boston for her birthday and they won't be able to drive back in time. I'm very disappointed and hurt that she's not going to make the effort to come. I would understand if it were a trip she was buying plane tickets for, but she's only an hour drive from Boston and only an hour and a half from here. And I get that it's the day after her birthday, but her birthday comes every year, and I'll only have one engagement party.

Now here's the real problem. I'm debating not asking her to be a BM now b/c I feel that she's not going to put in the effort or involvement that I'd like. But on the other hand, how do I ask the other friend (the one in California) to be a BM and not her when we're all just as close?

Thoughts? Oh and if you think I'm being too bridezilla, you can tell me that too.......

Thanks,
Laura

I think you shouldn't ask her if she can't even attempt to make it to your engagement party. If she's unreliable then its not a good idea to have her be a bridesmaid where there will be a lot of responsibilities. I would still ask the friend in California to be a bridesmaid because she is so excited for you, and even though she's far away, she seems like she'd be able to handle the responsibility. It may cause some hard feelings by not asking the one friend but you have to do what you feel is right. Good luck

i think u should just lay it on the line..tell her u want her to be in the wedding but u r not sure if she wants to be..she may not even realize she is hurting u..or maybe she does and this will give her the chance to tell u..hth

hmmm..I can see why you would be upset about a close friend not being too excited but maybe you should talk to her about it. Maybe there's something going on in her life that she has to focus on right now. I know how upsetting it is not to have one of your friends at your e-party but it is her b-day and its probably important for her to celebrate her day too. I would speak to her first before deciding not to ask her to be your BM . Unless you're just asking her to be your BM b/c you feel obligated to. Like you said its a huge time in your life, you need people closest to you in your BP don't do it out of guilt. I choose to have my BFF of 11 years has my moh and the other 3 BMs are family that's how I explained it to my other friends.

again i agree with Gina...

tell her straight up....'listen, u know we're close and i've always wanted u to be a BM, but its the biggest day of my life and to be a BM means to have responsibilities...I'd still love for u to be a BM, but lately i've seen that you don't seem to be too interested in my day, and rather than just assume, I need to know if you are interested, and willing to be as much a part of this as everyone else im going to ask?'

that way u put the ball in her court...u aren't just assuming, because maybe something is being overlooked, u never kno whats going on, that will open it up possibly for her to say 'OMG OF COURSE I WANT TO AND IM SOOOOO SORRY LEMME MAKE THE E-PARTY UP TO U!!!' and things could go great from there...ORRR, she could get snappy n bit*hy about it, which then will show u she really wouldn't be dedicated, and u wont have to feel bad about not asking her...

only catch, u run the risk of creating tension that might not go away so easily......but if u ask her and she screws u over, then u will still have tension...so u gotta pick ur battles!!

i think the best idea is to always be straightforward...

Thanks ladies. I've responded to her email saying it's fine but that I was disappointed because I was hoping she'd be there. I think I'll wait and see how she responds to me and then if I can ever get to actually TALK to her (not through email), I'll say something. She's also the type of person that is always busy when you call, says she'll call right back, and then never does. So who knows when we'll actually get to talk......

sorry you are going through this. if she seriously cant make your e-party, suggest she come visit the following week because you really want to see her. if she still finds an excuse and cant make it, i would lean towards not inviting her.

do you need her to make your BP even, or are you okay either way?

One way to include her later on without having her in your BP is to ask her to do a reading or something maybe. just an idea.

That's not such a bad idea. I just might go with that. It has nothing to do with making the BP even. It's already uneven. I have 8 girls (2 MOH's, 6 BM's, including her) and FH only has 6 (1 BM and 5 GM's). I can find ways to work with uneven numbers. It's moreso just a gut feeling I'm having.

from all the posts i've ever read on liw i've learned one thing, every time a friend is flaky or becomes distant, it's usually because deep down they don't want the responsibility of being in your bridal party. it seems that if you ask her to, something down the line will happen where she will disappoint you, hurt you, or just totally flake out. i think that if you feel like it's not a good idea to ask, or that she doesn't even deserve it, don't do it. the worst thing that will happen is that she will confront you which she probably won't, and you'll have to tell her the truth.. that she hasn't been there for you and doesn't seem excited, so you didn't even bother.
