what's an aisle runner?

Can someone explain to me what an aisle runner is and what it is made of? I know it covers the aisle and looks very pretty but do i really need one? is it slippery? can you make it out of fabric?

TIA!

The runner is made out of like a strong tissue. Its usally really soft material. Sometimes the church or wherever is slippery. Its usually white. You can buy one at Micheals for like $15. My church doesn't allow one, so i am not having one.

many churches and halls don't allow them, becuase people trip on them.... so double check before you buy!
