My friends have a layover for a few hours at JFK and don't want to sit in the airport the whole time. Do you know of any restaurants, areas, malls that they can take a taxi to and back? I've never really been in that area besides to go to the airport.

well how long is the layover? there's really not much around there that they can get to quickly and back....they can go to Rockaway Beach and walk around, or they can go up Woodhaven Blvd to the Queens Center mall...but I think it would be more of a hassle than anything. IMO, wouldnt be worth it.

I agree, unless they have a 6 or more hour layover... it's really not worth it.

Traffic to Queens Center mall is horrible--it could take an hour or more....I agree, it probably isn't worth it. There are tons of stores and restaurants in the airport....

Green Acres Mall is in Valley Stream and that's not that far from JFK (10 -15 miles) but I wouldn't do it unless I was going to be there for more than 6 hours. You don't know what the traffic will be like!

we live 5 mins from there and are familiar with the area -- there's very little to do --green acres mall is close but it'll be tough to get a cab back to the airport from there
my suggestion would be this -- there are alot of hotels around there -- i would go to one of them and hang at the bar or the restaurant.
There's a bar right up the road, Rockaway Blvd turns in to Rockaway Turnpike. It's called Bayhouse or Bayview Marina. It's a little bar right on the water and I stare at the sign all day long out of my office window, yet I can't remember the name of it!!!!
It has boats docked there, a quick bite to eat and cheap drinks. FM me tomorrow if you want the exact name, but it has a cool view and fresh seafood. Probably a $5.00 cab ride!

Thanks for the info. They have a lot of time I think- 9 hours or something. So they don't want to be stuck in the airport all day.

Since they have 9 hours, I think they can take the trip to Green Acres Mall. Just make sure they have the number of a cab service to take back to the airport.
