I know some folks think I'm planning so far ahead but in my opinion you can never plan too early. We booked our venue and are meeting with the DJs this week and will start looking at photographers soon. What have you booked so far and what's next on your list?

What's everyone book so far?
Our venue is booked and we started looking at photographers this week. After the photographers are settled (which could take forever since there are so many good ones!), we're moving onto DJ.
I know we're 2014ers, but I don't see anything wrong with planning early. For one thing, we get locked in at the 2012/2013 prices which are cheaper than 2014 and we get our choice of photographer/MC/whoever! There's nothing like getting a jump on things!

We booked the venue, church, photographer/videographer, DJ, and we booked a photobooth.
I like to get things in order and know how much we are spending on everything so far.

We booked the venue, but not the church yet. I have contacted ideal DJs and photographers inquiring about their suggestion on when I should book. The DJ told me ASAP, and the photographer told me to wait 6 months, to make it a year and a half before.
When you book early, you secure the prices NOW rather than who knows what they will be in 2014. I plan on booking church and DJ in August, and photographer in January. Everything else I will be putting off until next summer (the wedding is July 2014).
Booking early is the way to go (in my opinion) AS LONG AS you are positiveee that the business will still be up and running in two years!

ITA! I'm just curious which photographer told you to wait? Did he give a reason why? Out of my long list of photographers, only one told me they weren't booking so far in advance. Everyone else seems willing to take my money! lol

Just a tip on the church, if it's a catholic church they like to be the first thing to be booked. So pretend like you didn't book the venue yet when you go there.

Re: What's everyone book so far?
we are going to book our photographer once we definitely decide which one! well we sorta have but we haven't heard back from her yet but hey it was the weekend :) we went with very small companies so it's a must to book one of them asap.
after that DJs! we are only going to meet with 2 of those. we pretty much got our officiant though we aren't meeting her until January. I've been emailing pretty much anything I want/like so I can know what things will cost and go from there on extras.
also about to book ceremony music. I think it's just better to book everything and get it out of the way with deposits. oh yes we want a specialty wedding cake and they say book as far in advance as possible so we'll be doing that after djs.
makeup artist will probably be the last thing I book as I want to do like 10 trials (I'm insane and picky about makeup and must try many lol) most won't even do trials yet so I am going with whoever will do them now and try to pick days we are going out to dinner or some kind of special occasion. I also will probably do at least a few hair trials in there.

I haven't even thought about makeup/hair yet. How early do you book them?

I only started looking now because I want to do a lot of trials lol I'm trying to spread it out so I'm not getting my makeup done every single day. I'd say probably a year in advance? I mean if you are dead set on someone you don't want them to be booked.

Thanks for the advice, I intend to. I think god knows that on long island there is higher demand for reception halls than churches haha I have the added issue of not wanting my home church for the wedding. Not only is the existing church just not my style, but they have been talking about contruction for the last 10 years, with my luck it would actually happen during my wedding. Any advice on going to catholic churches that are not your regular parish? Ps, FH is from out of town, so his church is not an option.

I don't really think that it should be an issue. You would need to get all of your certificates from your home parish. Like the baptism, communion, etc. And I believe you have to pay more to use the church.
What parishes are you looking into?

crashing.. i did not want to get married at my home parish either bc FH and I didn't like the style of the church.. it is very modern (they redid it a few years back) and we wanted a more old school style church. we had no issues getting married at another church--they may ask you why you want to get married there-- they asked us why we werent getting married at my home parish- and i was honest and just said we didnt like the look of the church- the priest seemed fine with that. the fee was the same as it would be for some1 who is a member of the parish. good luck!
