when you take your invites to the postal office and tell them to hand cancel its SUPPOSED to prevent the invite from getting F'd up and arrive in perfect condition just as pretty as it was before sending. beware sometimes you do this and they still get ran through a machine

Re: What's Hand canceling?
most mail goes through a machine and it puts a stamp over your postage stamps....people usually do hand cancelling with their invites so they don't get ruined in the machine. the ppl at the post office have to manually put a stamp over the postage on each invitation.

i dont think all post offices do. the one i went to (in manhattan) charged me after the 1st 50 invitations...i guess just bc its time consuming. it was only like $4.00 though....

Nope, it's free. And it's not going to arrive in perfect condition. But it does 'typically' eliminate one step from the mailing process that can seriously mess and tear up your invitations.
But if you have TONS of invites they might not do it for you. Esp if it's busy. When I dropped off our save the dates I asked to step off to the side to do them myself. They were nice enough to let me.
