I decided to keep my name 'as is' and not take my DH's name at all (i.e., not even hypenated). Does that mean I'm not a 'Mrs.' My grandmother thought that I was still a Ms. because I didn't take my DH's name, but I thought I would still use my maiden name, but just have a 'Mrs.' in front of it.
Who's right? Am I a Ms. or a Mrs.?
Thanks!!!

Re: What's my name? Ms. vs. Mrs. (POLL)
If you don't mind me asking.. whay aren't you taking your FH's name?
OK I was thinking.. first I said Mrs. (since you would be married) BUT how would people address you if say on an invitation. Mr. John Smith and Ms. Marie Jones
They would HAVE to list you seperatly since your names are different. And they couldn't write Mrs. Marie Jones.. since your last names don't match
This could cause some confusion. As much as I hate Hyphons I think it makes more sense.
This is very confusing haha

Ms. is used for married or unmarried women. I would use that.

if u're not taking DH's last name and keeping your own, your name will be Ms. Jane Smith

i was told mrs. was proper for mrs. mike smith, but you're supposed to use ms. if you use your first name - for example it's ms. marci smith if smith is your husband's name, not mrs. marci smith. so by those rules, you'd be a ms. keeping your name means you won't use his first name either. i'm not sure if this is actually correct according to etiquette, but it's what i was told when addressing letters.

Hmmmmm, that's a good one.
A girlfriend of mine kept her maiden name as well. She changed from Ms. to Mrs.
So, maybe that's it! lol lol......Hmmmm, call your county clerks office, they may be able to help you or even try googling it?

I didn't want to change it professionally one reason being that I've published articles and other works under my maiden name, so I just decided to keep it the same personally as well. DH didn't care either way, so it was just easier for now. I'm still undecided about it, particularly once we decide to have kids.

I am not taking my FH last name either...so Ms. it will be. I don't see why in this day and age you need to give up the name you were born with. I have had the same name for 35 years...no reason to change it now.

Well can't you still publish under your maiden and be called by your maiden name but for legal purposes have his name (since it's let confusing for your children in the future)?
I know psych's who got their doctorate who used their maiden name on their dissertation and I know teachers who just continue to let the kids call them by their maiden name
Just a thought.
I totoally understand how you feel. You did the work you should be recognized by your name not your FH's

I am pretty sure that you can be a Mrs. Maidenname if you want to be.... it's perfectly legit.
I was always under the impression that Ms. is used predominantly by 30+ women who are either unmarried or divorced...... However, Ms. is occassionally used by married women, and it is totally up to you on which you prefer. After all, it's your name!
As for me, I will remain Dr. Maidenname.... Sort of have no choice, since name recognition is important in my career....

I'm not changing my last name either. I've been D. T. for 28 years and I love my name. I'll go by Ms. after we are married and if we have kids they will have both our last names

Re: What's my name? Ms. vs. Mrs. (POLL)
I'm a teacher, so everyone I work with goes by their last name, and it's pretty standard: Mrs. Maidenname means that you're married to Mr. Maidenname. So that doesn't work. Ms. Maidenname, however, means that you're either unmarried, or married to someone with a different last name.

I have not changed my name nor did a couple of my married friends. We are all Ms. Maidenname.
Socially I do answer to Mrs. T and so far have received invites with Mr. & Mrs. T
