I still have 14 mos to go and have done sooo much already.. the only thing is I dont like to go dress shopping.. before I had my son I was a size 6.. and lets just say im not anymore.. alot of the samples at the store are tight or dont fit and its soo depressing for me.. I just started a diet and going to the gym so I wanted to wait as long as possible before I went dress shopping again.. but I dont want to wait too long. Whats the latest I can buy it??

i was told that my gown could take up to 8 months (I never heard of it taking so long, but i'm sure they're just trying to play it safe) and I was told that we have to start alterations 6 months in advance. Lucky for me I have 18 months!
I know lots of people who get married a year or less after getting engaged, and they're fine. You still have some time. Good luck!

I just got my dress last weekend when I was home in NY...my wedding is 7 months away!
I procrastinated, but I was told that my dress should come in 3 months. I wouldn't push it by waiting more than 7 or 8 months before the wedding.
ETA: Unless you plan to buy it off the rack. Then you only have to worry about alterations.

We got engaged in late September, so I went shopping and ordered my dress the first week in October. It's supposed to ship from manufacturer on Jan. 15, then arrive at shop 5-7 days later. Needless to say, it's the thing I'm most stressed over...that my dress doesn't arrive in time. But, usually what happens is companies only 'cut fabric' 4 times a year, which means they ship out dresses every three months. So, technically, the dress shouldn't ever take more than six months. If I had had the time, I think I would've ordered about 8 or 9 months in advance.

when i ordered my dress in october they told me that it would be in in 7 months. we shall see. my wedding is in october, and the dress should come in around may.

If you are willing to take a chance, some places like David's have off the rack sales where you could go even 3 months before. Or some of the outlet type places (there's one in CT but I don't remember the name) offer only off the rack dress, so there is no waiting time. Good luck.

I was in the same situation and wanted to lose weight first but I'm almost out of time. If you're picky (like me -- and you said you are) I would start sooner rather than later so you don't end up like me 40 gowns later and STILL unsure!! Honestly, I suggest you start NOW!! Like next weekend. This way you have time to take it slow and take breaks when it gets annoying!!
ETS: Actually, as your pretend BM, I demand that you start by the end of this month! That's your deadline. So there.

thanx everyone - I was thinking I can just pick one out or narrow it down and wait to order it... even though I still hate trying them on!! next to my size 2 bm I am a beached whale!!!

It depends on the designer, but the salons all say 8 months to freak you out. So I would play it safe along with them and give your self 8 months.

I have seen that you should start going for fittings about 6 to 8 weeks before the wedding. So as long as the dress is in by then. Usually takes 8-10 months depending on what designer.
About the samples...they can pin it to your bra if it doesn't zip. Trust me I did this with a size 14 and I could still get into it as long as it wasn't zipped up. As long as you can pretty much tell how it looks. Then order it in the size you are now. They will have to alter it either way so get it for what you are now if something happens and you just don't lose the weight (I'm sure you will but just to be on safe side).
Just don't be stupid like me and gain after you order it.

What I'm doing is this.. I went and picked out my dress in November.. the bridal shop put a deposit down on the dress with the manufacturer without ordering the specifc size (point being just so they wont discontinue the dress without them knowing about it.. if there is an open order they will let them know that is being discontinued on whatever date)
When I did this I asked the dress shop when was the latest I should come in for measurement, and they said end of January/early February. I'm going the 22nd of this month to actually be measured for the dress, for the actual size order to be placed.
This way, the stress of *selecting* a dress is over... everything is done and ready to go, just waiting for the measurements. It's eased my mind a bit. (it also gives you great motivation for losing weight as you can look at the picture of the dress and say, 'that's MY dress!')
And also, don't be concerned about the sizing. When I went to try on dresses in October and November, I was size 26W. There were dresses that were big on me, dresses that fit okay, and ones that didnt that were clipped to me. Don't feel bad about it, I think some smaller people have the same issue also, because everyone isn't a bridal size 8.
