Whats wrong with some parents?!? What would you do?

OK vent here..not that important but a vent nontheless..

Every day after work I stand outside with my friend and unwind for a couple of minutes and chat. This little boy who is usually very sweet and well behaved leaves with his dad at that time. Well since the snow, he has found it amusing to throw snowballs (dirty ice now) at me. At first I found it amusing, him being a kid and found joy in it but then he started throwing it at my head. His father says NOTHING! So every day I tell him not in the head or face, he can throw it at my coat, but not at my head. He has continued to do this now since snow has been on the ground (so you can imagine for how long lol).

So today he throws not one but two at my head..I tried handling it with humor and saying..Sweetie not at Miss Noreens hair..it takes a long time to straighten..more hoping that the dad would step in and discipline his son...nope nothing. So he does it again..I have dirty ice all in my hair now and Im like ok xxxx no more snow at miss noreen..his father seems to get annoyed AT ME...and says..lets go and leaves with not another word!

Some parents I swear! I would never let my child throw ice at anyone let alone an adult let alone his teacher?!?! How would you handle this in front of the parent if it is to happen again? Obviously humor does nothing!!

ewww. how old is he and is he your student? if so, can you pull him aside and tell him that he can get in trouble for throwing snowball? we once had our principal say that anyone throwing snowballs would get detention.

Humor defintely was not the way to go with this child in the first place. His father is a real big help I would speak to the child sternly at this point because like you said humor does not work.

Noreen, it sounds like kid doesn't get disciplined at home. Otherwise he'd listen to you and dad would also tell him not to do it.

I would first say dont throw snow at me please I then would take the parent aside and ask him of he thinks that is right. WHAT A JERK I would yell at my kid if he did that.

I mean he is only 4 years old, I teach preschool but still. Hes a very smart child and understands everything and behaves like a gem in school. But imo..it proves that he is not raised properly because he acts out like this only when his parents are around.

I have a cousin who is that age and does the same thing. It is definitely the parents fault, the child must feel reinforced because nothing is done by the parents so he is allowed to behave this way Man do I hate when parents hate to take responsibility for their children, especially at that age.

HOW RUDE

I would take him aside in class and mention it to him... say 'now dont throw snow at Miss Noreen, what did Miss Noreen say about that? Thats not very nice and it hurts too, did you know that?'
and then when youre outside, say something like 'What did Miss Noreen tell you about not throwing snow anymore? We talked about this today, remember?'

This way his dad will get the idea that you even spoke to him about it and its got to stop

WHy not grab his father directly and explain that his little darling cant throw ice at people? I can't believe this even needs to be said! Is the father awake? What is wrong with people???? Hey no biggie............try not to take out Miss Noreen's eye today honey!

Thats so not funny. Throw it back at him. And there is no reason you cant scold this kid. Some parents are blind and retarded when it comes to their kids.

I have taken it upon myself, not to deal with parents and their unruly kids when in public and it affects me personally. Hence I dont have to look down when walking, if you cant curb your kid its not my problem if I walk into them.

Sorry but I would say something. Be assertive.

Seriously Noreen, like the others said, have a stern talking to him in class...I know when we were in School, NOBODY was allowed to throw snow/ice...nevermind at a TEACHER....Whats happening these days?!

There are a whole lot more parents like this guy, that what's happening. I mean for Christ's sake, he should have never let him start that nonsense. If he wants to throw snow at someone he should go home and tell his mother to pick a spot in the yard and stand there so he can have target practice. Just ridiculous

I would say to him 'Don't do that.Its not nice.'
Then see if his father steps in. I hate people that don't say anything to their kids when they do something wrong.
My friend's kid is 9 years old and he threw an ice ball at me and I'm pregnant.I told him 'If you hit me, I'm hitting you!' Then he said 'I wasn't aiming for you, I was aiming for my brother.' Yeah right! He has an excuse for everything he does.And his mother just stands there and doesn't say a word!

I don't get these parents that let their children do whatever they want and if you say something to them, you look like the bad guy. They are setting a terrible example for their kids.

Holly I wasnt kidding' throw it back at him' Im a true believer of a little embarrasment going a long way' when it comes to kids.

I dont have the patience to sit and explain to a child not to do things

Maybe I shouldnt have kids

What would I do?

If I was that parent...

Tell my kids to stop.. maybe a few times.. if she/he didnt listen I'd slap them upside the head, be arrested for child abuse and my children would have to go through hell just cause I wanted to teach my kids some manners.

If I was the ice bound.....

Dodge? *Shrug* Im not sure.. its not your kid. Obviously the kid's parent doesnt care enough to stop him, but I guess you could ask him 'Can you please have xxx stop throwing Ice at me?' Then again.. I know some parents who could say you set the example by allowing it to begin with.. altho not if *I* were the parent (see above)

We (my brother and I) NEVER acted up like that in public and if we did mess around.. NEVER with my father near. All he had to say 'Do we need to go to the bathroom' I knew what that meant and I was terrified. Hell im 28 now and just REALIZED I have *NEVER* been to the 'bathroom' with my father! hehe but the fear worked.

With my kids brothers & sister (who I helped raise and care for) I had very little tolerance for stupidity and disobedience. My sister decided once to push another child onto the ground in a mall, the mom saw and so did I. Before that mother had a chance to even peep, I grab my sister by both arms and brought within inches of my very angry face and said 'Do you want to die? Go apologize, now' and pushed her in the direction of the child and mother. She did. She hated me for a day but she learned it wasn't nice to be mean. And no... I didn't hit her.

Now.. same thing happened to HER about a month later and she looked up at me from the floor (she didnt start it, she was just pushed) and I shrugged and said 'push back' She did and the mother yelled at me I said 'Hey if you're not going to discipline your child and If I do it I get arrested then she (my sis) has a right to solve this problem on her own'. Everyone thought my sister was my child! LOL What fun we had. I never corrected people.

I keep telling Jim that I am going to be arrested for child abuse or kill our children. I REALLY hope he becomes the disciplinarian.

I pulled the kid over in class today and told him extremely sternly that I DO NOT want him throwing snow or ice at me ever again. That I was nice enough to play with him in the first place but that now he wasnt listening to me at all and throwing ice not only in Miss Noreens hair but anyone elses is just plain wrong. He laughed at first but then totally understood that I was not playing! I told him that if he continued to do so I was going to have to tell his mom who seems to be the better parent in this situation...today...NOTHING!

Thanks for all the advice..Im more annoyed with the father than the child though.
