Why don't they just tell you a price. I have visited with a few vendors now, and they keep asking me what my budget is... but I go to see vendors work so I can get an idea of what you get for your money.

Did you guys set a budget first, and then rule out vendors out of that range - or did you get prices first and then base your budget off of that.

I set a budget for each thing before I went...so I knew what we could afford. For example...my budget for flowers was $1500...and I refused to go a penny over it. I got quotes from $1800-$2800 and I shopped around until I found someone I liked...their work was great...and they would do it for $1500.

PS. I loved my flowers!!!

I figured out how much TOTAL I wanted to spend and then figured 40% of that would be for the reception.

The rest I just kinda guessed at -- fitting within guidelines based on a NY wedding.

The posts on here helped alot with that!

I set up a budget first b/c we had to see what we could afford. Its easiest for me that way. So far we are over our budget now by like $1,000 so will will have to make that up somehow. But I am trying to at least keep everything in the ball park.

I had an idea in mind of what I wanted to spend, but I refused to tell any vendor. I just kept saying 'well.... i don't knowww....' so they'd start showing me what i can get for what price. Then I'd negotiate from there based on what I had in mind.

This is where I used the boards to best effect. I figured out what I needed (# of band members, CP's) and would talk to other girls and check past reviews to find out what people paid -- gave me a much stronger position from which to negotiate. Also compare one vendor to another i.e. get a flower proposal then use that to ask another what their version of it would cost. We came in very under budget this way and had the wedding of our dreams. Good luck.

I have a general budget in my head when I visit vendors and choose vendors based on that budget. That said, I also think it's good to visit vendors you don't think are in your range: (1) you may be surprised to find that they can work within your budget and (2) it's good to see what their work is like and compare it to others.

I do not tell the vendors the amount I have budgeted, though. I find it easier to negotiate that way.

we had a budget set before looking for vendors. i kinda think its rude to ask your budget . heres my opinion if they give you a price and your like uhh i dont know if it fits my budget ill have to think about it or whatever and then they say wel whats your budget maybe we can work with you then its ok for them to ask, however, if you walk in and say how much and they say whats your budget then its rude

To be honest, I really didn't have a set budget for each vendor because I really wasn't sure what things would cost. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a rich bride. I just looked around and then figured out what I would like to spend. I also used the boards as a starting point. I think it can be good to go into it openminded without restrictions at first.

We set up a budget for how much we'd like to spend on everything. Then we figured out around how much we wanted to spend for the reception hall and started making appointments and seeing places. Then we narrowed down our choices for the places we loved and were on our targeted budget and then chose the perfect reception place for us. The place we ended up booking was the second place we went to see even though we saw many others afterwards. None of the vendors asked me for my budget and if they'd have, I wouldn't tell them either. If you do, you might not be able to negotiate a better deal. I'd let them tell me what they have to offer and go from there. Good Luck on your search.

I asked many of my girlfriends who have been through this before for approximate amounts they spent on vendors, looked on these boards a little and then went to talk to vendors with all the info I had gathered. I wanted to be somewhat informed while talking with vendors. I also had somewhat of an idea of what I wanted and didn't want to spend for example I knew I would not and could not spend over $100 per person on the reception, I was just being realistic. I think the key is to be informed and realistic.

The only vendor that asked me that was the reception hall!

I did a lot of homework and reading to get a realistic idea of how much things cost. The only thing I grossly underestimated was the officiant.

We set a wedding budget of $12K, then we figured that we needed to spend less than $60 per person to fit everything into it. Then we crossed out all of the hals that didn't fit into that ranges. That left about 6 places that we viewed.

I had an idea of what I wanted to spend pp on the recepetion and I found that it really helped negotiate the price. We wanted to keep it close to a $100 (including tax and gratuity). We negotiated a price that is a little over a hundred but guaranteed a higher minimum (which is not a problem).

I think most vendors ask as a way to open up negotiations. They always say that they will try to 'work with you' or 'that is too low'.

Good Luck!
