I understand that someone could be going through a hard time and just can't afford one. That's not what I'm talking about. This particular person in a childhood friend of the groom, absolutely has money, spent money on a hotel for the night of the wedding, brought a guest, took full advantage of the top shelp open bar, and no came with no gift. I would give him the benefit of the doubt and think it's 'lost' except that he did the same thing to a friend of ours two months ago. It's infuriating I think! Can he be called out on it? It's not like we had a little rinky-dink wedding or that he more than covered himself with the engagement gift...nothing at that party either.....

technically you have up to a year after the wedding to give a gift... give him the benefit of the doubt?

he technically has up to a year to give a gift. I would wait to see if you get anything between now and then before you bring it up.

I wouldnt call them out that may cause even drama and plus they may give it to you at a later date.

Re: When a guest doesn't bring a gift...
I would wait also....one thing you could do is call them in a couple of weeks and tell them that several ppl called to ask you why you hadn't cashed their checks...that was how you found out some gifts went missing at your reception...and ask him if his could possibly be one of them...that's really about the only thing you can do though. If no gift arrives by the time you are ready to send your TY cards, it's your choice whether to send one or not.

Re: When a guest doesn't bring a gift...
I would say something to him along the lines of 'we don't have your gift and are worried that we may have lost or misplaced it and were wondering if you need to cancel the check.' Honestly, he is the rude one for not bringing a gift so I wouldn't hesitate to say something. It is unacceptable for him to do that and the whole 1 year rule is just an excuse - if you don't have it now, you probably won't get it unless you say something. Don't let him take advantage of you!

Re: When a guest doesn't bring a gift...
I had plenty of people come without gifts and I would never say anything to them. I did not get married to get gifts. If I did not get a single gift I would still have had the exact same wedding and still be just as happy as I am today.
If you are that upset with the no gift guest then either say something or if you are that hurt maybe not be friends with this person anymore. If someone said to me hey where is my gift....they probably would never hear from me again. You may not know everything this person has going on in their life and may have a more than valid reason.

Re: When a guest doesn't bring a gift...
We had four non-gifters (and my wedding was one year ago). Two of the non-gifters are single guys who came without a date. The other two are good friends of mine who each brought a date! I don't get it.
We never brought it up to them.

I think this post misses the point.. you dont get married to get gifts but it is kind of odd to show up to a wedding and not bring a gift. I think people understand that when you come to someones wedding you bring a gift? Just like when you show up to someones house as an invited guest to dinner, you bring flowers, wine, dessert etc, and do not show up empty handed.
I agree that everyone has situations going on in their lives where they cant bring a gift but they should have said something to you. We had some non gifters and one was a godo friend, and I still cant understand how she would show up without a gift, when i know she spends exorbitant amounts of money on dinner and drinks out on a daily basis. Another non gifter explained to us she was strapped now and would give a gift later, whether she does or not, I honestly dont care, i appreciate her honesty in telling me her situation and dont expect anything.
I agree with Margarita, they are the rude ones for showing up without a gift.

Re: When a guest doesn't bring a gift...
I'm with Allison on this one. I had several guests join us for our wedding, stay over at the hotel, join us for brunch the next day and not bring a gift. I didn't sweat it at all.
I worried a little that maybe they brought something and it was lost, but that wasn't the case. We were just so happy they came to the wedding. One particular couple is one of our closest friends we see on a weekly basis. It just is what it is. They're still our dear friends and the fact that we don't have a wedding gift from them (yet? ever?) doesn't really matter to us.
As a side note, we did receive gifts from some people off our registry way early on in the planning (like right when they received the invites) that we thought were maybe engagement / shower gifts, but it turns out were our wedding gifts. Don't overlook that as a possibility.

I agree.. I think most people understand that you should bring a gift to a wedding. I understand, especially with this economy, that people may not be able to give large amounts of money or extravagent gifts, but something is better than nothing. At the very least the guy should have given you a card to congratulate you. If there is a situation where the person cannot afford to give anything then thats fine, but he should give you some kind of explanation for it. By saying nothing he looks like a jerk.

Re: When a guest doesn't bring a gift...
We tend to be scatterbrained and have sent a check a couple of times after the actual wedding. However, if this guy did it to your friend before and still didn't cough anything up, it doesn't look good. My brother in law had a friend like this that did it at several people's weddings. Some people just have no clue.
