When are you supposed to...

have an engagement party? Some people have been asking and I was wondering. When did you have yours? Who is supposed to plan/pay for it? Are there any rules going along with engagement parties?

Thanks! Hope everyone is having a good week, TGIalmostF!

Re: When are you supposed to...

we got engaged sept 20th and we just had our engagement party on saturday [january 2nd]

my parents paid for most of it [$3,000] and his parents gave some money too [about $1,500].
The restaurant was $38 a person with open bar and full sit down dinner.. great deal!!!

alot of the stuff was DIY [invitations, place cards, menu cards, centerpieces etc] so i saved alot of money on that and the DJ was a family friend so he was only $300.

Hope this helps!

We got engaged on Oct 10th and our e-party is on Jan 23rd. My parents are paying for it as their gift to us. We are having it was Swan Club. We are having about 85 people. I am paying for the DJ myself though. I also purchased my own CP's which I am putting together myself. My mom purchased the invitations and favors. Just remember whoever you invite to your eparty should also be invited to your wedding---thats pretty much my main advice to you. We kept ours strictly immediate family, BP, and about 10 friends each. I registered for a few items in case anyone wanted to get us a gift, but i let my MOH and mom spread the word on that. HTH

Re: When are you supposed to...

Im not getting married till next year but we had our engagement party this last fourth of July and it was amazing!!!! We had a outdoor barbeque and it was beautiful! We hired a DJ and my Mom did all of the cooking. We also had fireworks!! Check out my album for pics.

Even though my weddings not till next year we had an engagement/graduation party since I had just graduated from college. I really think that its up to you and FH to decide when you feel you guys want to throw your engagement party. FH and I paid for everything except the food which my Mom provided for us. Good luck.

Our engagement party was about a month after our engagement. My FMIL paid for it. FH and I insisted on keeping it small with just our immediate family. It was held at a trendy little restaurant in Bayridge Brooklyn. I didn't want anything big and elaborate, otherwise it would feel like the wedding.

we got engaged April 19 and FH threw a surprise birthday party for me the weekend after which FSIL actually turned into a surprise engagement party for us LOL. They had it at our friend's bar and it was a lot of fun... just drinks with awesome people!

We got engaged in Dec'08 and had ours in Feb'09. My dad hosted it, but I did all of the planning.

There really aren't any 'rules' for e-parties.

We're not having one cause ours is less than a year too. However, My FMIL is having a small get together at her house to introduce the families. Should ba around 45 people. Some of my family members are calling it an engagement party. I didnt think it was but guess just might be. Just not a big one

I don't think there is a rule..although I wouldn't do it to close to the wedding. We got engaged March 2009, e-party July 2009, wedding November 2010.

My parents paid for most of it, his parents some, and us a bit too.

Engaged: Feb 2008
E-Party: Sept 2009
Wedding: Nov 2010

We paid for it ourselves with DJ, CPs, and favors. We had it at the B.P.O. Elks Club in Massapequa.

I don't think there are any 'rules' persay, but I think if you get married within a year e-parties are seen as a way to get gifts. Over a year go for it!

We got engaged Aug. 21, had our e-party Oct. 3 and Nov. 21, and the wedding is Oct. 1, 2011.

We opted to do 2 parties to save $$ (yes, odd, I know, but it made sense). The one in Nov. his parents paid for and it was for the family at a sit down restaurant. The one in Oct. we had at our place and it was just our friends coming over for pizza and beer.

My only advice to you is that if someone else pays for it you are kind of stuck bending to their wishes - I wanted something low key (one party for all and just afternoon munchies), but the FMIL wanted a big dinner, so we had to bend, but did our low key pizza with friends.

Good luck and congrats!
