When can I apply for the STAR tax exemption?

Here's all the info on the STAR exemption. I don't think you'll be able to apply until after September (I moved into my co-op last March and they wouldn't let me apply until then). The forms get sent to the local assessor's office...it's all on the site.

We just signed our contracts last night and our lawyer told us the STAR program may not be renewed for next year!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Has anyone else heard anything about this????

Did he mean that the sellers may not have renewed their application for your home next year???

Nope, he said it has to be passed by the state every year, and since there is such a budget issue state-wide they may not renew the STAR program at all!!!!

Karissa, we were just told at our closing that you no longer have to wait to file for the exemption BUT it wont take effect until taxes for 2006! So you can file now but you wont see the results until your bill in December 2005.

Really? How often do you pay taxes? 1x a year or its in your monthly mortgage payment?

We pay our taxes through our bank each month, but the bank only pays to the town 2x a year, December and May. I believe this is how it is regularly done. My parents who no longer have a mortgage get a bill 2x a year for their taxes as well.

To qualify for the star in 2005 you had to submit your application by March 2004. If the house you are buying has the star program, that will be reflected in the taxes you pay at closing for the rest of 2004. But when you get your bill in December for 2005 taxes it will be for the FULL taxes as the STAR is not transferrable. So to qualify for the STAR in 2006 you would have to submit your application by March 2005 but you can submit it at any time so if you want you can go to your town office and get the application done right away.

They explained all this to us at closing, it was a very overwhelming 1.5 hours!!

My husband looked into getting the application for star and they are not giving out applications until september 2nd... There is a recording if you call..

Hopefully I get the ladies senior discount the rest of this year. I will apply for 2006 in September then. 2005 I have to pay my full taxes then I guess.

Oh..I hope not!! Our taxes are SO HIGH!! We we counting on getting the STAR exemption after around a year of being in the house (we were told you would have to wait a year).

you can call your town hall and give your address they know....

updated from my last post. Now you can download the application for Nassau County and but it's not due until 1/2/2005.

I don't think our mortgage will--the mortgage only includes the house payments, and ours has nothing to do with the taxes that are affected by STAR.
