Last night I went to dinner with a friend of mine, actually I think I am using the term rather loosely. She is the FW of DH's friend. We have hung out on our own a few times talked on the phone etc etc.
Well last night at dinner, I was being myself, silly, opinionated, expressing my disinterest with certain things. I felt that she was taken aback by my bluntness, and openess. I went home thinking maybe I was being too ME, and certain people cannot handle it. When she told me today what a nice time she had I told her my feelings and she said 'yeah I thought you were a little mean at times'
I guess my question is are there people in your lives that you really cannot be your total self around.

Re: When can't you be yourself???
Yes...with DH parents and that caused problems at the end. Some of DH's friends I am very quiet and not myself. Sometimes with my own family I am like that.

mu mother The idea that I have my own brain must make her dizzy.
eta - reason being why she rarely ever sees me. She doesn't like it then tough. We rarely speak, and I don't mind.

Your posts always make me giggle - they're so Carrie Bradshaw!
There are definitely people in my life that I am not my total self with. They are usually older than me (boss, his bosses, FH's older relatives). Not that I'm fake - I just reserve myself a little.
Other than that, I am me.

Thanks
I made this post up because I could have acted like this with DH or any of my friends and they would have taken me for what I am, they would joke around and say you are a nut- but I felt slightly uncomfortable after this dinner last night.

I wouldn't feel uncomfortable - you are true to yourself.

At work, and sometimes with people that I just meet.

Re: When can't you be yourself???
There are plenty of people who I feel as though i cannot be myself with ... FH's parents, brothers and SILs .. and most of my present co-workers ..
I don't think more than 10 people in my life know the REAL ME. I do that deliberately, to be honest.
FH always says to 'be myself' around his family, but then adds that if I WAS myself they would probably not 'get me.' (talk about mixed signals!!)
Then again, FH doesn't act like himself around my family, either. We both go into 'best behavior' mode since we are both a little 'out there'

That is it, only certain people get me.
I felt way comfortable with the NW at our GTG- I felt like they got me, go figure, people I hardly ever see.

Re: When can't you be yourself???
I guess I can't totally be myself around my MIL and FIL. They are very European and very old fashioned. I'm usually one to crack a joke and being sarcastic, but around them I have to hold my tongue. Not that they would judge me, just that if I say a joke they might not get it and I'll look like a jerk, lol

I understand EXACTLY what you mean!

I am myself around everyone. I personally feel if they don't like something about me then it's their problem.

Re: When can't you be yourself???
I recently started being more 'myself' around my inlaws and it made all the difference in our relationship. I don't care if they like me and they love it! Who knew?

Re: When can't you be yourself???
My me-ness can be a little over the top at times. But, that is me. Nothing I can do about it.
BUT, I am so toned down in front of the judges I socialize with at professional functions. The partners I work for get an earful on a regular basis, but those judges make me very aware of what I am saying and how I am saying it. Unfortunately the professional functions tend to have lots of alcohol readily available, so its a struggle at times.

Re: When can't you be yourself???
When FH and I first started dating and we would go out with his friends I found myself doing not being myself. I would stay rather quiet and reserved. I finally realized that I like myself and Fh loves me. Why should I worry so much? I still sometimes sit back and listen but that is because it is what I feel like doing.

Re: When can't you be yourself???
Ok well i am one of those loud, blunt girls. And i have to say for the most part i am and say exactly whatever i think. A lot of people really admire this BUT It does get me in some sticky situations and sometimes I will bring it down a notch ..to not overwhelm some. And let's face it ..it can be overwhelming.
So i would say i curb my openness, especially at work with the bosses
