when did u discuss return to work plan w/ boss?

hubby thinks I should wait until I am already out on leave and checking in via email and conference calls so my boss will see that I am being productive and responsible.

My gut is telling me I should at least approach the topic with her before.
The thing is we nearly lost my client to a competitor last week. It is all worked out now..and we are winding up with a bigger billing base...whew!

What do you think? what have you all done?

You and your boss need to know what your plans are NOW. Once you are out on disability you are not supposed to call in and work- plus taking care of a week old baby is enough work from you.
Your boss might think that you are not coming back since you have not discussed this with him/her.
Sit down and talk to your boss. You don't want someone else training for your job while you are out.

I agree - you shouldn't be expected to work at all while on leave.....I work with a few new mommies and none have called in while they're out, and that's fine! You're on disability, not working from home

Just to be clear here - if you are being paid for disability leave, it is illegal (according to state law) for you to be working - even if you think it's no big deal to 'just check email & voicemail.' If the state found out you were working, you would have to forfeit your disability benefits.

Pregnancy leave is considered the SAME LOA (leave of absence) as any other disability such as a broken bone, surgery or any other condition where a doctor certifies that you are unable to complete your job tasks.

From my own experience, I can advise you that it's best to discuss your intentions and plans for return with your boss BEFORE you leave to have the baby - especially if you plan to return to work. Be considerate of the fact that at this time of year, alot of budget planning happens for the following 1 or 2 fiscal quarters, and your boss may have to budget for temporary help if you are planning to be out for the FULL maternity leave AND FMLA leave. Also, you will probably want to have a say in who is assigned to fill in your role during your leave, and how you will plan the transition back to work after the baby.

Check out this website: NYS Pregnancy LOA

Under New York Law a pregnant worker is entitled to disability benefits for the period she is certified by her doctor as unable to work. Employees in the private sector are covered under the New York State Disability Benefits Law (Article 9, Workers Compensation Law). It requires all covered employers to treat claims filed for pregnancy-related disabilities the same as claims for any other disability. Specifically, benefits are payable for up to 26 weeks t o eligible employees who have submitted acceptable medical proof of disability.

thanks for the feedback-long

Just back to work after being out sick for a week...and 3 weeks left to my due date!
The topic of who will cover what was discussed in yesterdays management meeting. I have discussed this woith the other managers informally. Today we will draw up a plan.

Looks like I am running into a snafu w/ my laptop. I was told by my boss to purchase one and the IT guys would load all the prgs I need to do my job. Seems that IT has another opinion and was wondering why 'I' had to buy a laptop- I could have gotten a loaner for about 3 months. But now there aren't any to be had...and there is a limited amt of liscences available, blah, blah...so I 've gone ahead in anticipation of being a part of the work team...spent about $2.0 between the laptop, cable modem, routers, and Microsoft Office.
Will need to talk to my boss about this and hope she can work out this road bump. This should also show her how prepared I was to remain a part of the team.

I was also told that I may need to work at my CLIENT'S office 2x a week once I return. Again, I would need thi laptop programmed in order to do this. Again, I have totally agreed to this too....

But, I agree that I need to map out what my return to work plan- thanks for the feedback
