About a year out. We did it early because we live OOT though.

I booked my church in November 06 and my wedding is May 08. Believe it or not the date i originally wanted was already taken! So i had to take the day before.

we booked the church and hall simultaneously in 4/06. didn't want to have one, and not the other!!!

the church was booked AFTER the hall! [i know thats bad!]
But we got engaged March 2005 and everything, everything was booked that month! the hall was first, the church was 2nd, the photographer was 3rd, video 4th, ect ect . . .

I booked my officiant 8 months in advance. I wanted to be able to get one that I felt comfortable with. I thought it would take a few tries but I booked one on the first shot. I would not leave it to the last minute so you have a choice of who you want not who is left.
ETA: I am getting married at the RH so i didn't need to get a place of worship and RH for the same day. Just needed to find an officiant.
