I got my first one a month after we moved in - we get one every month.........trust me, LIPA wastes NO TIME in sending out their bills

I think you can choose either monthly or quarterly billing- we chose the quarterly so we haven't received a bill yet.

hmm.. I don't recall them asking.. Would it automatically be the same as the previous owners?

I would call them and check. Usually it goes if it is just electric than you get a bill every other month, if you have gas for heating, you will get a bill monthly. If it is for elec and gas used for only cooking and dryer than it would be every other month.
I used to work there and never heard of them doing quarterly billing (something I don't think they would do, they would rather have their money right away, plus quartly lets the bill run up and some people will not be able to pay it)
Usually they push what they call balanced billing which takes the previous 12 months and divides it and they bill you monthly, making adjustments based on actual usage if needed. I also heard they were looking to make all accounts, regardless of service monthly as well.
