When did you start to feel like an adult?

I still feel like a kid even though I'm 27, married, working on a career.
When did you feel like you actually entered adulthood? Or do you still think you're a kid, too?

OMG I was just talking to my friend about this! I am getting married, hopefully buying a house soon, full time job (i hate to say career cause that is so permanent) and I still feel like I am 'pretending to be an adult'. Like any minute the world will discover I have no idea what I am doing!

I decided I am never gonna be old. When I was 10, 16 seemed really old. And when I was 16, I remember thinking there is nothing to look forward to after 21. And now I am 25 and still SO young

Re: When did you start to feel like an adult?

I'll be 30 this year...been on my own since 21. Never looked to parents for support, etc. I actually take care of them.

AND I STILL FEEL LIKE A KID!

I honestly don't think I'll stop feeling like a kid until I have my first child. Maybe that's why I'm STILL not ready to have a child yet...

Re: When did you start to feel like an adult?

I still don't.
And when we look at houses - some of the are starter homes and I'm ok with it - but others are 'adult houses' - houses we could raise kids and grow old in.....that kinda freaks me out and makes me feel like a grown up!

Re: When did you start to feel like an adult?

When my older brothers (5 and 6 years older than me) started treating me differently and taking me more seriously.

The irony of it is this was around my 20th birthday...and I am still to this day far from feeling like an adult!!!

Re: When did you start to feel like an adult?

yesterday.

actually, when i moved to NY and got engaged...it forced EVERYONE to recognize i was an adult (even though i had a 4 year old at this point) and stop treating me as a child. this has meant my own christmas cards, my own invite to parties/ceremonies....etc.....it means I get a call sometimes before my mom about family happenings....yes, it took a rather monumental moment for me to feel and be treated as an adult.

Re: When did you start to feel like an adult?

when my father died when I was 17. I had to teach my mom how to use the checking account. Thats when I knew that I was just as grown up as her.

Re: When did you start to feel like an adult?

I was actually thinking of posting this on LIF!

I'm 30, I' ve been married for close to 2 years, I've been on my own since I was 22, I've been working in Manahttan for 8 years, and I still don't feel like an adult.

part of it is our families, & I also don't feel that I look like an adult.

We're going to attempt to buy a co-op soon, so the whole mortgage thing kinda grown up, but it's still not a house.

I think the closest I ever felt to being an adult was taking my DH to the ER & filling out all the paperwork for him, but then when we came home & told his family, my MIL told me I should have called her to take care of all that, making me feel like a child all over again. . .

Re: When did you start to feel like an adult?

i have felt like an adult for a while. i have always had to pay for everything since i was in high school (food, car etc) so i always felt that i was responsible for myself.

i really started to feel like an adult when i moved to germany for a year and i had to take care of myself in a non english speaking country. my mom said, when i said i was moving there, that i couldnt go there, but i went there and took care of myself. she took my seriously (as an adult) when she came to visit me and she couldnt get around (b/c of the language) without me. i had to help her and she was like, ok you can do this.... mind you, my apartment was the size of a shoebox. but i was very happy

she always says that i have been the most independent of all her children.
