Here's my issue - I'm not getting married until 2009, but I think I've fallen for a dress already. How long do brides typically shop around before committing? Or is it more like you know it when you see it? My other question is, does anyone know how long a particular design will remain available from a designer? I'd like to hold off on buying my dress if possible, just to keep my options open and drop a few pounds. Any help would be appreciated.

i bought mine a year ago, and its finally arriving next week. Ive been waiting for it to come in for a whole year lol.
Some designers keep styles for a few years maybe 3-4.
Its never too early to start dress shopping, its up to you.

Re: when do you pull the trigger on the dress?
It depends on the dress and designer. if the dress is popular it will stay around longer...if not so much it will be discontinued quicker-usually a dress will be up for at least 1 full season (meaning spring to spring or 1 year).
The least amount of time I would give yourself is 9 months from your wedding to order your dress-every designer again is different some will not take orders inside of 9 months because they can not guarantee it.
Your dress normally will come in about 3-4 months prior to your wedding (this is just the way designers cut the dress) they cut depending on date...for example, if you order your dress 1 1/2 years in advance they will not cut your dress until they are cutting dresses for your wedding time frame.
I would ask your shop if there is a way that they can contact you or a way to contact the designer directly to find out when a particular style will be discontinued-most designers will put when a style will be discontinued on their site-some however do not.

Re: when do you pull the trigger on the dress?
I'm getting married in May of 09 and i bought my dress in october, and it came in last week. I tried on maybe 20 different dresses and looked at 100s online, i knew as soon as i put it on it was the one i should buy. As long as you love the dress i think buying now is fine.

Re: when do you pull the trigger on the dress?
I have looked at alot of dresses but I have narrowed it down to 1 designer. I just now have to choose which dress that I really love. Once, that is accomplish, I plan on ordering my gown at least by spring.

Re: when do you pull the trigger on the dress?
I started looking for gowns last year April and mine is coming in next month. It all depends on the designer and if you love it and feel that is the dress for you then get it. Because you may never know if later it will be discontinued.

OK, First of all, wow you ladies are all amazing - both in terms of how genuinely nice and helpful you are, and in terms of how knowledgeable and on the ball you all are. Second of all, the consensus seems to be go for it, so I'm gonna look into it this week. I'll keep you posted. Thanks again.

Re: when do you pull the trigger on the dress?
For me, I stared at my gown on Maggies website for over a year and it was the first i tried on and I knew that was it!!!
You can email a designer or have the salon call to see how long a dress will be avail or if it has a pull date....I would do my best to do this on my own. Ive emailed maggie sotteros site many times bc I did have a dress come and go prior to seeing my dress and when I went to try it on they told me i would be disc. and sure enough it was!!!!
Having the salon call - and they prob wont do it in front of u, odds are theylltell u anything for a sale.
If you see it and ulove it buy it!
Go with it!

Re: when do you pull the trigger on the dress?
I am getting married in a little under a year, and I already found a dress I love! The store said it would take 3-4 months to come in, but they always tell brides give at least 6 months for it to arrive just in case. Then add another 2 months for alterations and stuff. So according to them, 8 months should be your minimum (although lots of places I hear will rush order dresses but charge you for it). But if you find a dress you love now, just get it, because you will probably be drawn to the same style over and over again anyway!

Re: when do you pull the trigger on the dress?
Im getting married 10/09 and I've already purchased my gown. The designer starts making them according to who needs theirs first. The bridal salon said it should be in 4-6 months prior to the wedding-so just enough time for alterations. GO FOR IT!!! For sure

we're only knowledgeable because we've been planning for a while, you'll get there too. At first i think just about all of us didn't know the answers to things and trying to figure it all out. Ive been planning for 20 months, just 2 more months to go.
Definitely go for it. You find something you LOVE and know its the one then you get it done early. If not, you know you have time to still look for it. Plus its fun, so enjoy.
