How does that work? Obviously right now my medical plan covers me and the baby because I'm pregnant. When will the baby need his/her own insurance? My husband asked me about this the other day and I had no idea.... do the first few visits to the pediatrician get covered under your plan? TIA!

Re: When does the baby get put on your insurance?
I think it depends on your insurance. For my insurance we had to call to notify them that I was pregnant. (Some doctors offices may do this for you) Everything involved in the delivery and hospital stay is covered. Once the baby is born the hospital takes care of all the paperwork, notifying them that the baby was born.

Re: When does the baby get put on your insurance?
My SIL just had a big headache with this. If the baby will be under the same insurance plan that you are covered under, he/she will be covered as soon as he/she is born since the insurance is aware of your OB care for the last 9 months. However, if the baby will be under insurance that you are not covered under (maybe your husband's plan) you may need to get a pre-certification before the baby is born and then once the baby is born you will need to notify them immediately.

just notify the insurance company as soon as they are born and they are covered right away. When you get their birth certificate, I believe you have to fax them over a copy.

Re: When does the baby get put on your insurance?
Here's what we needed to do for our insurance.
My husband and I still had our separate policies when the baby was born. I upgraded my policy from a 'self' policy to a 'family' policy. After the baby was born I needed to call the insurance company with the baby's name & date of birth so they could add him to the family policy. The baby is covered retroactive to his birth date. So the pediatrician visits and the other misc. charges in the hospital (circumcision, hearing test) were covered, even though he wasn't officially on the policy then.
Each insurance company has their own policies though so I'd encourage you to call the customer service number and ask them what you need to do.

Thank you! Luckily my husband and I are both on the same insurance (his)...so I will have him call the insurance company once the baby is born. I will call in the meantime to find out the process. Thanks!!!

Yes, since you are on the same insurance, the baby will be covered when he's born. My situation was a little different since I had my own and the babys father had his own (we were not married) So the insurance company went by who' birthday came first, mine or the dads. The birthday that came first was the one they went by.
But now the father has no insurance so my son was automatically put on mine.

You actually MUST legally add the baby to the insurance within 30 days or else the insurance company does not have to pay the bills or cover the baby...Make sure you have your DH call the insurance company or your employeer to add the baby within one week of the birth.
