When getting marriage license, can I shorten my maiden name and add his?

When getting marriage license, can I shorten my maiden name and add his?

I am thinking of keeping my last name and hyphenating my future husband's name. However, my maiden name is long. Would they allow me to shorten my maiden name at the marriage bureau or do I have to go someplace else? We're getting married in NY. I can't find any websites with this info.

So for example,

If my name is Jane Kamamamatoroo
and my FH name is John Smith

Can I become Jane Kamam Smith?

(that's not my last name - don't get frightened :) )

Am I allowed to shorten my maiden name?

Social secutiry does not accept hypens in the last name, but you can change your name to whatever you want it to be.
How about using your maiden name as your middle name ?

I don't think you are allowed to. But it would be kinda cool if you could!!

wouldn't you have to change your name first to the shorter last name? and then you could use that name on your marriage license?

I want to take my maiden name as my middle name (I don't have one) and then my FH as my last name. Can I do that all at once or should I do as someone said- change the middle name part first??

Actually I think that you might be able to do that.
There's a link to click for surname options and then there is the question: What are my surname options? and I think that what you want to do is the third bulletpoint.

Check it out

You can have a lot of fun with that option.

Put id down on your marriage license application that way, and then after you are married and change your name at SS, you use your maiden as the middle.
So if you are Jane Doe, you become Jane Doe Smith

Umm sorry to correct you but that's not true- I hypenated my maiden and married names and they put it all on my new SS card. They also fit my middle name on there as well so it looked like this

First Middle Maiden-Married

I still don't know how they fit it all

You can change your name to any name you want to on your marriage license.

I think you might be able to shorten your maiden name and add it to your husband's last name. I was just reading an article in the new Brides magazine where they were discussing all the different options for changing your name - like adding his, or keep your own, or hyphenating, or using your maiden name as a middle name. I think when you go to change your name because you're married, you can change your name to anything (not positive, but it sort of makes sense).

My FH worked with this girl who married this guy, and the guy decided to change his last name to his mother's maiden name. So when the girl married him, she took his new last name - which was his mother's maiden name.

this is from the net... sorry it's long... i copied it, didn't type it ........................................

Social Security would like to send congratulations to all June newlyweds across the nation. We also want to remind brides (and brides-tobe) that if you intend to change your name -including using a hyphenated name -it is important for you to notify us about your name change and to get a replacement Social Security card.

The new card will have the same number as your previous card, but will show your new name. If you are working, you will also need to tell your employer about your name change so that your wages are posted correctly to your Social Security record. If you forget to do so, it may cause errors in your earnings record history, which could lower the amount of your future Social Security benefits.

Social Security makes the name change process as quick and simple as possible. You will first need to complete an Application for a Social Security Card (Form SS-5), which is available from any Social Security office or which can also be downloaded from Social Security's website at www.socialsecurity.gov.

We also will need to see proof of your identity. You must show us a recently issued marriage document as proof of your legal name change. (If you are changing your name for another reason, such as a divorce, we must see a divorce decree specifically stating you may change your name or a court order for a name change.)

If the documents you provide for a legal name change do not give enough information to identify you, then you also must show two identity documents, including one document in your old name and a second document with your new legal name. In addition to

your name, these documents must contain identifying information (date of birth or age) or a recent photograph. Also, all documents must be either originals or copies certified by the issuing agency. We cannot accept photocopies or notarized copies of documents.

Once you have the required identity documents, just take them along with the completed Form SS-5 to your local Social Security office.

If you need more information about changing your name with Social Security, whether it is due to a marriage, divorce or any other reason, you can visit Social Security online at www.socialsecurity.gov/ssnum ber/ and read the fact sheet, New Rules For Getting A Social Security Number And Card. Or you can call Social Security's toll-free number at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800325-0778) and ask that a copy of the fact sheet be mailed to you.

Yes, you can change your name to be whatever you want it to be (that's what they'd told us when we went to get our marriage license)
