I dont tip when Im getting takeout. If they deliver it, Ill give the driver a couple bucks but not if Im picking it up myself.

At least from my experience working in a restaurant, the cooks never get tip money... only wait staff and bussers. I only tip for take-out if I'm having it delivered.

I voted yes in the poll because my husband does it but I don't and never even thought about it until I saw him doing it.

Hmmm ... let me add, I noticed he does it when we get takeout from Ground Round & you order from the bartender ... think he does it because it takes away from her time serving the people at the bar.

I do - after i saw FH doing it - FH's family is in the restaurant business so he always tips for everything. The tip doesnt actually go to the cooking staff - it goes to the guy that took your order and packaged it. (he is the guy that makes sure you have the extra ketchup you asked for and stuff like that)

Tip on take out?? Maybe if I take out from an expensive place, but I am so not tipping the man at the pizza counter. I always tip on delivery.

Funny you ask this question. The other day I ordered take out from Olive Garden and I was totally confused if I should leave a tip or not.

I definitely don't. My logic is this..the tip is for the waiter or waitress and bus staff, etc. The chefs get paid a normal hourly rate. When you go into a retaraunt and you pay a tip it doens;t ever go to the cook. T%he reason you tip waiters and waitresses is becuase they don't get a normal hourly rate, they get a waiter's wage which is very low (help me out people in food service?) it's something like $3 an hour, so they need your tips just to make a normal wage. If you were to leave a tip when you did takeout I don't know who it would go to, certainly not the chef, maybe the hostess.

When picking up, I never have. But I do tip for delivery.

For take out I usually give a couple of bucks - $3 - 5, depending on the size of the order. The person at the counter is still taking the order, placing it and in a lot of cases packing it.

For delivery, it's a bigger tip, usually 15% (give or take).

Yes you should but not the same as you would for sit down - like $1-5

When I worked at outback before they did the take out area - we all staff was paid the basic waiter salery then we were tipped out - however the take out person was not tipped out (like the hostess, busboys) because the restaurant assumed like the servers they would be tipped for bagging and prepping the food. They would get say 1-5$. I saw this same policy at other restaurants I worked at.

Many restaurants have someone who takes the orders, places them with the kitchen, puts them into the togo containers and pack the bags then brings it to you.
