I think they take about a month to come in from the site I want to order from. Should I order ahead and let them sit for a bit, or not order until I am ready to send them out?

Re: When should I order my invitations?
I would think a little ahead of time so just incase they get lost in the mail you have enough time to get new ones

Re: When should I order my invitations?
Jess, I already ordered mine. I have to have a finalized list of addresses by January so the calligraphy can get done. You have more time, but you might want to just get it done so it is one less thing to think about

Ahhh! That makes me nervous! I am still questioning what invitations to get and how to lay them out!

Don't be nervous, while I'd order them a couple of months in advance, you honestly still have plenty of time, even with a calligrapher.
For example, even though I definitely wouldn't recommend cutting as close as I am, it can still be done. I just ordered my invites about 10 days ago for my 3/15 wedding. I expect them in my hands by this friday. I'm immediately sending them back out in the mail to the calligrapher who will turn them around in a week and mail the envelopes back to me. I will then stuff them and get them back out in the mail around New Years for my 2/15 RSVP. Will I be a raving lunatic in the next couple of weeks? Probably.
But, it can be done. So don't worry, you still have lots of time. Maybe order them in the late winter and you should be great.
ETA: I should add though that the choosing and going back and forth with layout changes and proofs took me about a month, because I'm very indecisive, so add that onto my timeline.
