We are getting married next August 9 and it just ocurred to me that I should probably do this soon, huh? We are not registering for much...we don't want a formal set of china at all. Are there any guidelines as to what we should register for? Like what's tacky to ask for vs. what's expected? Are towels and sheets okay?

I think people usually register at about 6 months before. You can register for sheets, towels, china, everyday dishes, crystal glasses, appliances,etc. The main thing is to register for a range of items from a few dollars to a few hundred dollars. Some people will go in together on an expensive item. Give people a variety to choose from. Some people will buy the little things such as a spatula to put in your wishing well.

Practically the day after we got engaged, people were asking us where we were going to register! The engagement gifts came pretty quickly after we registered. I think you can start now, and gradually add stuff later.
Its fine to register for sheets and towels, and it also helps to register for things in a variety of price ranges, to suit all of your guests. Most stores you go to will have a list of suggested registry items.
Give yourself a lot of time when you go! Good luck!

I think that you can register at any time --- but just be careful about what you register for if you are doing it early.
For example, sheets and towels are seasonal and change over about every six months - So, you won't want to register for these until about six months before...

I registered about 5-6 mos before my wedding. I just wanted to do it before my shower but not too early that things wouldn't be in stock by the time the shower came.
Yes, be careful if you register for seaonal items...they get discontinued quickly.

I need to so everyone says, I am getting married in may but i dont know where we will be living and we will need everything, so i am totally overwhelmed at the thought, I need a few more months I think.

I just registered in July for my December wedding...would have done it earlier, but it was like pulling teeth at first to get FH to go.
I think everyone had good suggestions for you - especially to register for items in different price ranges. You want to make sure there are things on the registry that different people can afford. And do as much as possible - there is nothing worse that trying to shop for a bridal shower and there is nothing left on the list!
Good luck with it - it can be overwhelming, but exciting!!!!!!
