Personally, I think you should enjoy being engaged for a while. BUT, if you already have a date preference, start thinking about a location. I would say to think about the guest list now only because when you start looking at RHs, you will need an idea of a head count for the different size rooms available. We are approaching the end of 2010 and the RHs have had their 2012 books out for a while now, so dates are filling up. Don't wait too much longer to start looking at the locations.

Hey! I got engaged mid june (today in june to be exact) We started looking at places in beginning of July :) We found our place and just booked last week! Now, I am going to take a step back...I mean still plan..but relax more about it. I just wanted to find the perfect place :)
IMO: Really no time line with it..but if you have a date in mind..start looking, book the place, and then take a little break since we have time :)

I would say definately take a minute step back and enjoy being newly engaged!
On the other hand if you have a specific date in mind I would start looking for a RH soon.. theres no specific time line all i've done is book my RH

the worst mistake i made when i got engaged last year was RUSH. I rush to book a hall for eparty and then we overextend ourselves... then we rushed to book a hall that we didnt truly like as a couple... and lost our deposit.. Im surprise FH still wants to marry my crazyy a**... i drove him NUTS! unfortunately for some of my friends, many FHs cant deal with extreme change and have called off weddings... dont scare your FH with too much right now
luckily now we rebooked at a place that we loveee but i agree with all the posters above... RELAX and ENJOY!!!
you have time... you can book in Dec/Jan.. but no need to rush e-party and venue right now...

Personally, I got engaged at the end of Dec and didn't do anything for about 6 months. We booked a place and set a date at about 7 months, and haven't done much since. Lots of people wait until after their e-party to start wedding planning.
I wish I did this ! would of save us a ton of arguments

if u have a date in mind, it doesnt hurt to book early, halls book fast. 2 years gives you more options.

My goal was to have a RH picked before our e-party so you have an exact date to tell people then.
We booked our RH about 2 months after getting engaged

I got engaged January 11th of this year and I booked my RH the same month for a January 2012 wedding. So my advice is start looking for an RH sooner than later.
Registering- Personally I did not register for my e-party that was in August bc FH and I would rather get gifts for the bridal shower and we preferred $. Just to clarify, we did register, but we didn't tell our guests.

Congratulations!!! I am also getting married in March 2012
Some couples do not register until a couple of months before their wedding date, but if you are having an eparty I would suggest to register for a few gifts soon. Just in case someone wants to buy you a gift Also, I wouldn't put this on the invite, it can be spread by word if you register
In terms of looking for RH's... I would start looking soon if you have a specific date in mind... sometimes RH's can get booked up to 2 years in advance.

Thank you ladies!! I am very inflexible about my date (since I have spring break the following week, when I will be taking my honeymoon )......I just want to the the RH and church out of the way then chillax for quite some time

That's exactly what I did! I booked the RH and church in January and then I spent the summer booking things since I had soo much free time.

I got engaged the day after you. I have booked my rehearsal hall and photographer but by no means do you have to. We actually had no intention of having either of them done. We were planning on going and looking at a lot of places but we completely fell in love with the place and it was within our budget.
Enjoy the wedding planning. If you start looking around now you have plenty of time and wont feel pressure because you have plenty of time.

Everyone thinks im crazy for starting my planning 3 years in advance, but 1. i have a HORRIBLE work schedule and will prob need even more time to plan what i want and 2. i have a specific date (or two) in mind so the ealier i pick a RH the more likely i can get the date.
Go at your own pace and have fun! Personally, my goal is just to find a RH within the next 6 months or so. I already have a theme so i'm also thinking about the little extras that i can work in.
I also started to save....doesnt hurt to have 3 years of saved $$$ in the ING account!!
