FH told me last night I should start looking for the dress. I told him I will after we take care of the engagement photos and STDs and my weekends will be busy for the next few months. I'm at a little under 10 months until the wedding. Am I okay to wait a few months or should I start looking ASAP?
P.S. I have no idea what kind of dress I want. I want something simple yet elegant and budgeting only $1500 for a dress. Any suggestions on places to look? Thanks!

I would start looking soon since your wedding is only 10 months away. Some can take up to 6-8 months to come in depending on the designer and that doesn't include alterations. Since you don't have any idea of what you want (I didn't either) it may take a bit longer too. It would be awful to have to scramble around last minute looking for a dress or finding one you're in love with but finding out it won't be delivered in time.

Most stores recommend ordering a dress AT LEAST 10 months in advanced. However, you also hear a lot that the dress came in 2 months even though they said 8. So, since you are on a budget, and have a limited time, I recommend sample sales. Search local stores to see when they may be having their seasonal sample sales, and you could find a steal on a dress, and walk away with it that day. Now it's a risk, so if you rather not try that, then I recommend starting to look soon, at least to get an idea. This way if you fall in love with a specific style/designer, you can find out how long in advanced they recommend ordering it. You wouldn't want to pay for rush fees since you have a tight budget.

I would start looking soon if I were you... some places take a few months for the dress to come in, then you need to alter it!

Since your budget is 1500, I would definitely recommend Lillettes in Bellmore- I almost bought my dress there, but ended up falling in love with a Pronovias dress (although my mom liked the price of the Enzoani gown at Lillette's more lol). They have tons of gowns there in your price range.

Can you gals tell me on average what is cost for a wedding gown. I'm kind of clueless. My budget can be increased if needed. It's just I didn't to spend that much on a dress I will only wear once.

Wedding dresses can fluctuate so much in price (any where from $200 - $20,000!) lol. I don't think 1,500 is unreasonable price at all. It's very do-able and what I plan to spend on mine (with alterations hopefully!).
Whats most important is when you pick a price, stick to it, lol because if you venture into another price point you can drive yourself crazy with too many options/decisions! RK Bridal is a great site to check out, they have the dress prices for most of the designers listed right there...they are very affordable place, so at other stores the price may be a little more, but you can at least see what your budget can get you on that site.

I would definitely start shopping asap, even for mother of the bride/mother of the groom and bridesmaid dresses because they can take 6-8 months as well. My mom's dress is taking 8 months to come in.

I would start soon if I were you. It took me about 2 months to find my dress and it's taking about 10 months for my dress to come in. Some designers I tried on took almost a year to make the dress.
I would definitely check out Village Bridal. They have a lot of dresses within that price range.

I would start soon. I ordered my dress last night and was told it will take 8-10 months to come in and then I will need some alterations. I went to Bridal Reflections in Massapequa (my experience was ok), Kelly's Kreations in Brooklyn (they were terrible but had the biggest selection of Maggie Sottero dresses), and Paradise Bridal in Patchogue (they were truly amazing and sooo helpful. Cherisse was a pleasure to work with). Good luck!

Since you'll be in the city, you should check out Pronovias as well and see if you can make an appointment with Alana- some of the gowns are in your price range, but most are in the 2-4 range
