I found a bridesmaid dress that I absolutely LOVE and was just wondering if it's too soon to start having my girl's measured and place the order since I'm not getting married until August 2010. Ever since the fiasco with my dress, I'm so worried they are going to pull this dress and decide to discontinue it and I'll lose out on it.

I read an article a few weeks ago about brides who want to have contracts with their BMs to make sure they don't gain weight or drastically change their style between when they agree to be in the party and the wedding.
Just naturally, it's unlikely that they'll be exactly the same now as they will in over a year. In fact, you might completely change your mind about what you want between now and then!
But if you're the type of person who just *knows* by all means you and your MOH can start shopping around and see. Maybe ask the '10 gals their opinions too. You have to do what you're comfortable with. You want to be just as excited then as you are now about it, of course! Good luck! HTH

one of my bm's put a deposit down so we had the dress and we were able to get notified if the dress was going to be discontinued so they would have time to order it. everyone else went mths later to get measured.

I would suggest to wait-
We ordered our dresses in late January and they came in on Tuesday! And it's over 5 months before our wedding...I know now I didn't have to be in such a rush.
I think you should wait mainly because THINGS HAPPEN. One of my bm's got pregnant (surprise!) and is due ON MY WEDDING DAY...thank god she told me before we ordered. Actually she told me the day before we went ordering.
Also-not to be negative nelly-but have you read on our 09 boards about BM's dropping out? It's a reality, things change, people change, and in today's economy some bridesmaids are realizing that they can't or don't want to financially take on the burden.
I would suggest ordering their dresses no sooner than October-find out the dress style number, fabric, and designer, and find the shops that carry it or can get it in for you. I doubt a bridesmaid dress would get discontinued within a year of it being out in stores. And even if it is discontinued, perhaps the shops can call you to let you know to order it ASAP...

That's a great point. I'd like to think I won't have any BM dropping out since they are all family and close friends but I totally get that you NEVER know! I think I'll mention my 'discontinuing' concern to the woman I've been working with and see if maybe we can set something up where she will contact me if she hears they will be pulling it.
I guess my excitment is getting the best of me because I'm finding the things I love so much more easily than I thought I would.

I know it's SO EXCITING to think about....be patient! Just read our boards to know what we go through as we get closer to our day. I know for me, SO MUCH has changed with the details of our day. Sites like this gave me so many fabby ideas, there is a good chance you'll change your mind on things (ummm the first 6 months I changed my color scheme like 5 times, I ordered MY dress early and ended up doing a reselect!!) Let your plans and vision continue to take shape. You will have a gorgeous wedding no matter what. Good luck!

The prior posters make a great point. It's so true that you just can't predict what's going to happen. The store where I ordered my dress (and where I was planning to order BM dresses) closed suddenly in Jan. I was so relieved that my BMs hadn't put a deposit down anywhere.

Relax and just enjoy being engaged for a bit! You want to order your BM dresses no more than about 6 months out. While you can be sure nobody will drop out, can you be sure nobody will gain or lose weight? Can you guarantee you won't change your mind about the color they are wearing? (I changed my mind 3 times!) Even though you found a dress you love now, can you be sure a designer won't come out with something new in the next year that you love even more? You can't ask your girls to pay for a dress, and then change your mind 8 or 12 months from now and ask them to buy a different one.
