Re: when to order invitations
In my opinion, yes. I would wait until closer to the date. What if your guest list grows or shrinks? What if you need to make a change to the ceremony start time? A LOT can happen in a year. I'd wait until the 6 month mark, which still leaves 3 months for the invitations to be made and sent out. I know a lot of people will say 'Well the best vendors book up fast!' I know of only one invitation lady on here who has a ridiculous waiting list and I just don't see the appeal. They were nice enough but not worth the cost or wait IMO.

Re: when to order invitations
i think it depends
if you'er ordering from a book, then yes, it's too early
if you're ordering from a designer, it may take a while to get the design set in stone. so if u dont have to commit to a number just yet, then dont
i ordered mine a year in advance but i was dealing with a designer
i didnt finalize my proof until about 3 1/2 months before my wedding
about 8 months before my wedding, we changed the church time
u just never know what can happen

MAGNETSTREET IS AMAZING
AMAZING!!!!!
I just checked with our invitation company - MAGNETSTREET - and they totally said I can finalize my invites closer to the wedding. They're going to hold my order for me!!!
I ordered them last week because they were on super sale - i saved over $100 on them and they've been soooo amazing with me updating and changing things left and right.
