I often have to call cells for work purposes and I always think it's so awkward...

WhenI have to do it for work, I say there name.
Hello? Profeessor Brown? Yes? Hi, This is Heather from . . . .
If I am calling a home or office I say, may I please speak to Professor Brown.

I always say the person's name with a question mark regardless of if it is a cell or home phone. I do this because I had a few occasions where I called people and thought it was there voice and it was really their sibling or worse their parent. I always make sure. One friend sounds A LOT like her mom.

Well, you know, as I'm sitting here stuffing envelopes for four hours and dodging all of the bombs this stuff just comes to me!

But to answer the question, I say:
'Hi is this Jane?'
and then go from there.

Usually if its a friend, they answer 'Hey', so I just say hey back because I know they know its me. If its someone I don't talk to on the phone a lot, I usually say their name with a question mark at the end.

if its the first time i call them, it depends on how they answer
if they are like:
Smith from Smith Company? ill be like 'hi mr smith....'
if they say 'hello?'
ill say 'hi mr smith? this is melissa, yada yada'

Work calls, I ask if it is the person I want to reach and then say my name.
Personal, I just say, 'Hi!' or 'it's me' b/c most of my friends and family have me programmed in and know who it is when they pick up.
