This was a concern of mine too. We decided on having our wedding be 'Black Tie Optional' ( for various reasons) and now I'm worried for my mom b/c she does not really like any MOB dresses that she has seen - she still thinks she is my age and sometimes dresses it . So she wanted to go to some other stores that people have told her about but I'm afraid that if anyone else is going out to get a fancy dress, they might be too similar - or worse - the same as my mom's.

i was glad that they want to wear an 'evening gown' and i totally expect everyone to be wearing floor length gowns (it will be december) and i want a classy and elegant affair i just dont know why they wouldnt be shopping in a department store instead of ordering a dress from a bridal shop and having it altered im not going to stress it - just wondering if its normal or not

They know the style of MOB dress for my mom and what my grandma plans on wearing. I havent really thought about them. I dont see it being a problem...
But I get where you are coming from-

I think that some people just get really excited to get all dressed up and go to a fancy affair and if they dont get to do it too often, then they wanna go all out. Or maybe if its family members of yours or FH's they feel like they should or want to be just as fancy as the rest of the BP. I decided not to stress out about it too much either. I dont think anything can really take away from the mother of the bride

I do see your point tho with the whole spending more in a bridal shop and paying for alterations. I've never really heard of anyone doing that before but I guess it's not totally unheard of.

Yeah - that could be a little touchy. Do you chat with your aunt regularly? Maybe if you are fairly close with her you could offer to go with her and this way you can 'regulate' a little bit. Or maybe just casually mention some places that have really pretty evening dresses for better prices and no need for alterations. (i.e. Nordstrom, Bloomingdales, Lord and Taylor etc.) Maybe that might push her off into a different direction.

My aunt bought a dress at Estelle's (but we saw it in an MOB shop also)...I don't think they'll upstage your mom as long as they buy something that is appropriate for an aunt.

My Aunt, Grandmother and Mother all bought their dresses from the same place. I have no problem with it and they helped my mother pick out her gown.
