I heard something about some of them giving like 10% away to actually help and the other 90% for their board... anyone know where a list is of ones that are real and ones that are BS?

I do a lot of fundraising with the Leukemia & Lymphona society. Over 75% of the funds raised go directly to support their mission & goals. Check them out - you can read their annual report & stuff like that.
(My FH'd Dad has Leukemia so it is a favorite charity of ours)

Guidestar is really the best site to check out-- This is my line of work--I am the Director of Funding for a large non profit--- great to see that people really do check into an agency before deciding to give to them-- We also chose to give to a charity for our wedding favors(not the one I work for) Dh's SIL suffers from Rett Syndrome so we gave to that--- I work for Covenant House --which started as a homeless shelter for kids--- Good luck and know that you are doing a great thing

Oprah's website also has a bunch, many you may have never heard of. Good luck, there are so many to give to.

if you go to www.guidestar.org, you can review their tax records & everything... you can relly investigate any listed charity & find where all their $$ goes to. Just keep in mind that all charities do need to pay administrative services (salaries & office equipment & such) but be on the lookout for places that put large portions of their $$ in this category.
