She had NO friends ....She lived right across the street from my parents best friends.... SHe was a total loser..all those people who said that they were her friend....total lies... I was friends with the first guy they questioned becasue my friend had gone out with him when I was in 9th grade... She was weird!!! and those movies..it was hysterical!they were totally making fun of Japs....

How sad that it was a total depiction of Merrick. I LOATED junior high because of the jappy image that was going on back in the day. * Note* being a jap had NOTHING to do with being jewish in Merrick. It was a label that people carried around based on an attitude/image. You have no idea how those of us whose parents couldn't afford Benetton or ESPIRIT (whatever the flavor of the day was) suffered. It was horrible! I wouldn't relive those days if you offered me a million dollars. Don't you dare try to be an individual in Merrick, everyone lived a cookie cutter existence and crucified you if you were 'different'. That's why I chose not to raise a family there. From what I gather, it's the same garbage in 2002. My niece just started MAJH and she's looking into getting a job (she's 12) so that she can buy/afford what's 'in', instead of what her parents can afford for her. Nevermind her parents pay sick taxes for her to go to school there. It's messed up.
As for Amy, she's a total freak-o. My husband used to do pinstriping for the Buttafucco's shop (in Baldwin) and they all knew what was going on. And that stupid wife of his stayed with him because........?

I am so happy I never went to JFK Bellmore! I went to Mepham. My parents almost bought a house in S.Bellmore and they did not like what they saw - with the people over there.. I used to date a total wacko from there... what a spoiled brat he was and a psycho! Then I met my Fh and he is as normal as can be!!

I hated HS... I could not wait to get far away...My older sister went to Mepham and loved it(when she went to school) and my genius parents decided it would be great to move south when I was in 7th grade(mind you they live 6 houses SOUTH of merrick road...) My dad owns Savall Drugs in North Merrick and he felt that he lived alittle to close to his customers... But you totally had to spend tons of money to fit in.. I actually only speak to one friend from HS and this was after not talking for 10 years...and she moved to CT to not raise her kids this way...the ironic thing is that her husband who she met in college is the 1st cousin of a girl that was the biggest JAP!!! and now she has to spend every Holiday with her and has to hear about people we graduated with..... and this is why I live in North Westchester!!!

MSCJLK, I hear ya!!! I'm in Patchogue for the very same reason (well, also because the cost of houses in Nassau are OUTRAGEOUS). I ran into a former classmate of mine (that I haven't spoken to in a good six or seven years) and it was sort of like what you described. She still lives in Merrick, still frequents all the local bars (Peddler, Crease, etc.) knows who hangs out at these bars (still?!?) and basically hasn't grown geographically past Bellmore/Merrick. She's still referring to this one or that one (from high school no less) as her best friend, or her bestest best friend or whatever. It's very sad. What's even sadder/funnier in some aspects is that all the 'winners' from high school that you expected great things from are basically busboys or waitresses at these establishments. It's like some sort of small town disease that you never move on, never leave mom and dad's home and never advance beyond the borders of your community. Thank God I escaped (no pun intended Merrick!

I also remember as a kid LOVING your dad's drug store. He was the only local store that sold rock candy (he-he) and Brucci nailpolish that I could afford on my allowance. Ahhh, the good old days!

I AM SOOOO FRUSTRATED!! I have a little sister that's 12 and will be going to high school in 2 years. They just changed the zoning in Bellmore and even though we live less than 1/2 a mile from Mepham (walking distance), she will have to go to JFK (3 miles away)!!!!!!!! I do not want her to go there!!!! (no offense to anyone) I don't want her to turn into a you-know-what. But it's inevitable. :)

I went to HS in Queens (Long Island City HS) - nothing to be proud of..(we just went to what we were zoned for - wanted to go to the hotsie totsie HS's in the city, but my parents were like 'NO WAY!!! traveling on your own ???' thats why i moved out here, LOL. so my kids dont go to some of the schools I went to !
