Where do you get a copy of Birth Certificate/first Marriage License

Where do you get a copy of Birth Certificate/first Marriage License

I swear... my FH is going to drive me nutty...

not only do we have to now figure out WHERE he got married (he doesn't REMEMBER!) so we can get a copy of his marriage license so we can get a copy of THAT (he lost it in the move), but now he tells me that his birth certificate was in that very same grocery bag (yes, I said GROCERY BAG) where he kept all his important papers - that is now lost and gone forever.

How do we get a copy of:
a) certified birth certificate
b) marriage license if he only knows the STATE in which he got married (Louisiana... with MY luck, his marriage license will be in the EXACT FILE CABINET where KATRINA hit!)

Does he remember where he got married?

From that, find out what county the town/city he lived in is?

- Then usually you can check the web.
- Do a search for 'marriage license' for that county
- Could be Clerk of Superior Court, town clerk office, etc. It depends on the State, County.
- Get the main number for the right office and call them.
- Ask who you need to contact for Certified marriage license copies

Birth certificate

Again: where was he born? If they don't record in that town/city, contact the county where is birth location is located.

To his defense, he got married in the airforce and moved from place to place. That's why he doesn't remember WHERE in LA they were when he got married. I'm mad we have to do some digging - and I wish he was more organized, but he's not an idiot. . He really is quite intelligent.

Born was easy... Queens.

Thank you for the info! As soon as we find that important piece of the puzzle, that info will help!

I would never implied he is an idiot.

Does he recall a place/hall, anything that could guide you on the town/city or 'area'?

lol... I thought 'does he remember where he lives?' was along those lines... and I wouldn't have blamed you! lol

I played 20 questions with him. He knows, of course, that they 'honeymooned' in New Orleans. I was asking him how long it took to drive there, etc. I felt like a detective. And that is SO the part of his life I want to know details about and want him to relive right now! lol

oh... and that's the other thing. It wasn't a place or hall. Just a justice of the peace. That's why there aren't many details to remember.

I would try the county clerks (at the County level). Ask them if there is a way they can help you.

How many counties is there in LA?

Man, you got your job cut out for you.

Good luck!

Why does marriage license? Doesn't he want his divorce papers instead?

Yup! We have some homework to do!

the wants to see the marriage license to confirm he wasn't married in a church, so he can see that a justice of the peace married him. Otherwise, if he wasn't married before, in order to just get our marriage license, he would just need the divorce decree, which we already have.

Good luck Sarah!

Maybe the county/state would have records of who officiated ihis wedding. The officiant would have signed the marriage license and mail it to the state/county. So his/her name would show on the records.

Just trying to find 'other' avenues to find the info.

For birth cert- maybe try the hospital he was born at, or maybe even the church he was baptized at.. they might have the record on file still.. my church did..

And as far as the marriage cert, definatly try the town hall...

GOOD LUCK!

You can't use the hospital birth certificate or baptismal certificate for that - you have to get the official one from the state - he can either go to the town hall he was born in (not sure how that works exactly in queens) he can go to the NYS website and order a duplicate copy from there - you have to go to the department of vital records.

I also don't know if a marriage certificate will state whether or not he got married in a church? Mine only says the town and state I got married in, not the location.
