We are thinking this may be the year for our long awaited trip to Europe but I have no one to leave my Maltese dog with. Does anyone know of any alternatives to leaving him in a kennel or boarding him at the vet? I would rather skip my trip than to put Scooby in a cage for 3 weeks.

We are going away next weekend and leaving our puppy in a cage free boarding center. (unfortunately we live in VA, so it won't help you much)
There is this place that my parents on LI looked into when they had their dog. They didn't end up needing it, but found it through a google search. Cage Free Boarding

We have used the PetsHotel through Petsmart once. I toured the place (just walked in and asked to see the place) before allowing our girl to stay there and it was clean and the play area was decent size. They take the dogs out to play every day and you can get one on one play time too if you want it. There was also someone there at night which I liked. We got a room with a TV for her since it was the first time she was away from home. Hope this helps.

M&m, how long did you leave your dog at the PetsHotel? I guess when the dogs weren't out playing they were in cages? How much does something like that cost? Thanks so much.

We kept her there for I think 4 days. They do have kennel rooms, not cages or you can upgrade to rooms with a cot and TV (what we used). It was not too expensive but if you add on extra play time and special treats it can add up. Our girl, Laica is a big dog and she had plenty of space in her room.
Barney LOVES it there, always come home to one tired pup. I have never kenneled any of my dogs. My older dog was lucky enough to have grandma puppy sit, but the pup needs more activity, and this place does the trick. Good Luck!

I have a maltese too! This is just food for thought - I know it's not for everyone, but I brought her WITH ME TO EUROPE and it was the best thing ever. We didn't have any problems with hotels, flying in the airline cabin, or access to places but of course it depends on the countries you are going to.
FM me if you want TONS of info about how to accomplish this. If not, you could always have a trusted family friend or pet sitter come to your house to watch your furbaby.
