Re: Where does......

I'm a guidance counselor at a high school. I absolutely love it(but that can change daily...LOL). It can be very stressful, but for the most part the hours are great, out by 3pm, weekends, summers and holidays off. Lots of good benefits, with lots of sick days and decent health insurance.
Downsides- requires a Masters Degree, no big pay increases or bonuses, typically start early in the am, and occasionally nights (back to school, graduation, prom, etc.)
And you MUST love the kids or you will get completely burnt out

Hope that helps!

Good luck!!!

Re: Where does......

I see. So even though the day ends at 3, that means you must start really early.

I can't really afford to go for a master's degree. What kind of courses and work are involved?

Re: Where does......

I have to be there by 7:15am. You can technically be done by 2pm when school lets out but realistically I leave about 3pm on the daily.

Coursework required mostly counseling, education and psychology classes. Its very interesting (at least to me it was). Learning how to work with students at all different developmental ages. Counseling students in crisis, grief, group counseling, college and career counseling. My program was 2 years, I did it at night while I worked full time, 3 classes a semester.

Hope this helps!

What do you do now? What do you not like about it? If you could do anything regardless of pay or expertise what would it be???
So there goes the counselor in me

Re: Where does......

If I could turn back, I would probably be a teacher. My friends who are teachers work the summers though for extra $$ (who can blame them). I just think it's a good lifestyle, but I know they have a ton of work.

I do marketing for a Y's gym. My hours are nice, usually around 10 am to 6 pm. And I live a block away. Can't beat it!

I work at a printing company. I work in the production dept for estee lauder brands. We do a large portion of their retouching and printing.

I like it a lot but I eventually want to move out of ny and open up a vegan bakery.

Yeah. I work summers too for now at least. But its very flexible since its extra money. Some years I have waitressed in the summer just like 3-4 shifts a week for a change of pace and quick cash. This year I am tutoring just 8 hours a week!! SO I still have my summer off and I get paid contractual rate which is like $40/hr.

I have to work summers at least until I can save up for my wedding and a house. After that when I am having kids I will take summers off... but I feel like I am too young to take summers off right now... especially when we really need the money. Working in education does provide a lot of flexibility... but its not for everyone. Patience and flexibility are key!

I work in finance at a securities evaluation firm (stocks/bonds) in NYC. It can be good money, if you get the right position. And if you are bonus eligible, it's a very nice perk My hours are 9-5 but I tend to have to stay a lil later But, other than the fact that I don't really like business, it's a good job
